Testing the waters to see whether we would be interested in fundraising / sponsoring an ex-player again for the coming season, in the same way as we did for Scott Kashket’s away shirt this time around. (Hopefully the Gasroom sponsorship isn’t a curse.)
And, if we do want to do it, thoughts on potential candidates?
I had my eye on Sido Jombati, but he has been released by Salisbury and I’m not sure whether at 37/38 he will be playing on with another club.
They have to be in the sweet spot between playing at a high enough level to offer player sponsorships and not too high to make it unaffordable - and they have to not already have an existing sponsor.
Curtis Thompson (released by Grimsby) & Dominic Gape, Aaron Pierre, David Wheeler (released by Shrewsbury) all possibilities depending who they sign with. Max Stryjek if he leaves Jagiellonia Bialystok? Franco Ravizzoli?
Colin Daniel a left-field option if he re-signs with Ilkeston Town but he’s another in his late 30s who might retire.
Sound like a good idea. Consider this thread an opportunity to long-list players for inclusion on any poll.
Bear in mind should a player sign for, say, Gillingham then the cost would be £600 which is IMO too much. On that basis I will wait until most candidates have found new clubs before starting the poll.
Entirely uncontroversially Matt Bloomfield manager sponsorship could also be an option (although I don’t know if Luton offer this or how much it would cost if they do.)
As an evolution to the ex-player sponsorship I’d like to propose we instead sponsor a WW womens team player. The women’s team is part of the Wycombe Wanderers Foundation, so money raised would go directly to them rather than another club.
Edit. That is quite expensive compared to other local women’s teams, one level higher. Chesham United have two packages, £50 and £120. Maidenhead United have three at £150, £200 and £300. That makes my £50 sponsorship of a Bucks CCC player very good value!
I’m keen to support this, but personal opinion (and not wanting to start a MB debate), we shouldn’t be sponsoring another player or Manager at our level (or above). It’s just putting money into the hands of our competitors and I’d much rather support one of our existing squad instead.
This works best when we can support a player at a non-league club IMO.
This seems sensible, even though I’d love to sponsor Matt again.
Sam Vokes would get my early vote or Wheels if they ended up somewhere else in non league or somewhere that the sponsorship is relatively cheap, the excess money then goes to the ladies team.
I also think it would be great to sponsor a player who has been released in the last season or at worst the season before.
Agree wait until a few more ex players have found homes.
Unless you’re actually giving it to Luton in which case I think I’d rather contribute to something better like burning my own house down.
For me the order of preference is as follows:
Ex player in NL or lower
General sponsorship of our women’s team
One of our 1st team squad fringe players who hasn’t otherwise been sponsored
The WW Foundation
