I was quite excited to take my 6 year old to his first away game at Luton on Boxing Day, but now I’m reading that the Oak Road Stand is safe standing these days, which I guess means he’s screwed in terms of being able to see anything if everyone in front decides to stand up?
There are “accessible seating tickets” listed in the Bobbers Stand, but:
a) If everyone with a small person bought accessible seating tickets for their family, I imagine there wouldn’t be enough for those with genuine accessibility needs
b) Not being in the Oak Road stand will take away from the atmosphere - he’s far from being an armchair supporter, won’t watch football on the TV and loves being at the game itself
c) He really wants to see the “funny entrance” where you go “through someone’s garden” and we wouldn’t get that with the Bobbers Stand
Any advice? Has anyone been there since safe standing was introduced and how are the views for little people?
We have 1300 tickets so I think it’s unlikely to sell out. I’d get in early and stand at the front to start with and see what happens. Safe standing is way safer than the previous unsafe standing that took place in that horrendous stand. The entrance is something to see, though, and I’m interested to discover if the open-air toilets were changed for the prawn sandwich division!
Didn’t realise it was now safe standing, I was looking forward to getting my knees crushed. Takes away some of the charm of Kenilworth Rd, .
I might suggest standing towards the back or sides that way the little lad won’t get caught up in the melee when we score!
Seriously though, looking at pictures online they have to provide “seats” even though it’s safe standing, so he’ll be fine standing on that I’d have thought.
It’ll be a great atmosphere and depending on results in the next few weeks I wouldn’t bet against us selling close to 1300 tickets too, although clearly the appeal (for some) of putting one over on MB has gone.
He’s a season ticket holder this season for the first time and loving it. Nagging me to do an away game (amd we need one that is close enough). Surely after we win promotion, we’ll never play them again so Luton will be a collectors item!
Yeah, I was wondering about him standing on the seat. It’s a long time to stand for, though so not sure it would work for the entire game. I might take @CurrieToScoreFirst advice, get there early and probably try and be in the front few rows.
Just watch out about the front row at Luton. From previous experience, the stand is set quite low and I think the first few rows have their eye-line level with the pitch surface
Yes, you’re right. Front, back, sides could all be options for us. Plus people in those areas are probably more likely to remain seated throughout. I think we’ll take our chances and if worst comes to the worst, could always ask stewards if we could switch into the accessible area “for his safety”.
My remark about not playing them again was fairly tongue in cheek of course, but this may well be the last time at KR. I’ve been there once before and, as a taller person, I remember having my knees crushed too. Who’d have thought that would happen in Easyjet land? We won on my last visit, I vividly remember the police escort the away fans had on our way out of the ground!
