Allen and Leahy did ok. Van Sas wasn’t bad. But no one else looked any good.

MoM: Van Sass, saved two really good Reading opportunities and seemed much more relaxed tonight, rather than panicking with his distribution. His goal kicks were a bit of a struggle towards the end, and he guessed the right way for the penalty but couldn’t get a glove on it.
Everyone else just looked slow, jaded and short of ideas. No creativity, no real supply, no link-up play, and far too sloppy in possession. We gave the ball away far too easily and never really looked like creating enough.
I guess I’m the only one who thought Van Sas should have done better for the goal.

I agree , should have been saved. Not much power in the shot and ball hit the turf right in front of him. Sadly Van Sas has an error for a goal every game.

Just watched it again. Its a could have rather than a should have saved it. He had 3 or 4 people almost directly in front as he goes down for the ball it gets tge bounce off the turf, which makes it all look worse. I wouldnt say it was an error though.
We had 9 behind the ball at the time of the shot though, without any pressure on the shot.
Other than that, thought he was ok. He seems a better keeper for distribution, maybe not for other things.
But the thing with young keepers are they will nake mistakes as they learn.

It’s a bit disturbing that we’re reduced to such faint praise but I thought that match was a shocker. Fouls galore right from the start and allowed to continue by a referee apparently recently promoted to the Football League, a commentator who sounded as if she wished she was elsewhere and a scrappy, disjointed match between two very poor sides. To make things worse, a shambles of a performance was followed by some unbelievably poor penalty kicks.
A plus for me was the performance, during the 90 minutes at least, of Mikki Van Saas. Made me wonder why he’s been given so few opportunities to show what he can do. And I really don’t want to see Taylor Allen going out on loan.
No, you definitely aren’t. He’d made some excellent saves earlier in the game but that didn’t impress me at all. I’ve gone all Shariah Twayne. Or whatever her name is.
I thought a Taylor Allen put in a great shift. Particularly in the second half when he was getting further forward.
Overall the game had a pre season friendly feel to it in the first half but livened up in the second. It appears to me like a lot of our players are under cooked for the start of this season and should improve with games.

I didn’t think it was a particularly bad game - much better performance than the Stevenage match. We actually created some chances last night.
edit: To clarify, it was still shit, but it was better than the Stevenage shit.
Things is these games are always going to be disjointed. You’ve got completed changed XIs for both sides, with Academy kids coming in off the bench. You’re rarely going to get a really cohesive performance. I actually thought the 2nd half was a decent game with some promising signs for us.
For some reason I get loads of Reading content on my Facebook. Odd that the reaction of the Reading fans to what was a tight 1-1 was relatively buoyant compared to the reaction on here. Can only feel that the penalties meant it felt like a victory for them and a defeat for us. In reality it was a point each, with Reading picking up what may or may not be a useful bonus point.
