Match Day Thread : Charlton

So when I stated last week that “you can’t win every game 1-0 it simply isn’t sustainable” I got some criticism from one or two on this forum. Well, that didn’t take long did it! :man_shrugging:

For a manager who came in on the back of being able to improve players as a coach, noone has got better and our best player has got worse.

He also came in saying he wouldn’t change anything from Blooms time if he didn’t need to, gone on to change the formation and make us unwatchable.

I like his interviews TBF, and can see sometimes the playing style has worked, but today shows have far we’ve fallen in a few months. Not even competitive

Agreed, such a slap in the face to him as well. Really sticks out to me what kind of management we are now under

The question is will he survive if we don’t go up , will they admit that maybe he wasn’t the answer equally does he deserve longer like Bloomfield had.

I’m not losing hope until Saturday. Wrexham fail to win and we do win and we’re 2nd again, simple as.

I remember how well we played losing at Wrexham and feeling so excited for the season.

Couldn’t have a more opposite feeling at the thought of more Doddsball. Go up or not I’m not interested in travelling from South London and paying to watch Dodds try and grind out 1-0 wins with no shots allowed before the 60th minute.

Absolute nonsense. Norris had a shocker today but has made numerous good saves in the weeks prior that have earned us big points.

Even when results were bad under Blooms he wasn’t this defensive and his squad was infinitely weaker.

The irony-meter will be off the scale if we win our next two games 1-0 and go up virtue of Charlton beating Wrexham.

We were very unfortunate today to lose by four. I go back to my earlier message - you can’t go into games in League 1 that defensively each week. You have to play on the front foot for chance variance or you end up ruing those stupid draws to bottom four sides because you get freak results like today where you lose 4-0. You have to create variance. Three at the back with two very defensive wing backs. No overlaps. Two defensive minded midfielders. 8 players in very deep positions. Not the right approach. Two huge games now and we are by no means out of it yet. Come on Wycombe. Believe.

I dont actually think we were that bad today. Charlton were just miles better. When they went 2 ul, it wasnt a 2-0 game, but by that point it was too late.

Onto 6 points, and Charlton spanking Wrexham

What game were you watching to say we weren’t that bad?

We were absolutely awful.

We had 2 shots before 75 minutes, both smashed over the bar. At the end we evidently did some stat padding but I was already halfway down hillbottom road at that point

Let’s go back to basics. Ten minutes in, it was clear we were clueless. Lumping it up to an isolated Kone who spent more time on the floor than holding up the ball. At 2–0 down, we had a golden opportunity five minutes into the second half to change shape and try something different. Instead, we spent another 45 minutes aimlessly launching the ball forward, hoping for a miracle.

Taking off Scowen and Bakinson without addressing the bigger issue the broken system—was baffling. The shape hadn’t worked in the first half, and it didn’t work in the second either. Yet the manager stubbornly stuck with it, refusing to take a risk or make a tactical change, even as we were being torn apart.

Can we still go up automatically? Maybe. Playoffs? Possibly. But right now, I’m not convinced it’s either. Because we’ve got a manager too proud to adapt or admit when he’s got it wrong.

An 8,000-strong crowd turned up today. Shame a lot of them won’t be back for Stockport.

Come on Shev, please give it a rest. You must be the most relentlessly negative poster on here by an absolute country mile and it really grates.

Today was appalling yes. No excuses. But we’ve won 5 of 7 games before that, barely conceding a goal or even giving up any chances. We’ve shown plenty of character and determination throughout that run, and have played some quite decent football at times too.

Today was an aberration. They scored two goals from two shots in the first half. Norris made his howler and they were surging with confidence at 3-0 and 4-0 up in the second half, whilst we were psychologically done. Sometimes it happens. We lost 4-0 at home to Accrington in the penultimate home game of 2018 (a very similar performance to today) and still came back to get promoted.

You’ve clearly never given Dodds a chance, and are by far the most rapid to get on his back at any opportunity. I agree with you in my distaste at Blooms’ exit, but your “I told you so” attitude is so deeply unappealing. Dodds actually has a decent overall record in difficult circumstances, with some slices of poor luck. I massively rate Blooms and think he’ll be extremely successful in his career (so no underrating him here), but his record after taking over was substantially worse than this, with far worse performances too. Dodds needs time and patience, not constant denigration

Taken them a long time to get going and still may go down. So suggest you take off those rose tinted glasses.

This sounds sarcastic but it’s a genuine question. When have we played good football in the last three games?

Maybe one passage of play in stoppage time in each of the games against Bolton and Stevenage? I’m struggling beyond that.

Unfortunately our record against Birmingham, Wrexham and Charlton is P6 W0 D0 L6 F5 A14 P0. Only team we’ve beaten the twice we’ve played them is Lincoln who are down in 11th spot

Close call for negativity, but I just give the title to @trevor!

I still dont think Kone was isolated. Mcleary was off him, Bakinson was up there as was Humphreys at times. Problem was nothing stuck with him, or ge nade the wrong decision, case in point being the 4th goal.

Looking good for the playoffs then!
