Match Day Thread : Stevenage

Matsuo Basho told to go away and do more stuff about frogs.

So if we go up is it going to be an awkward “we were jeering/shushing each other five minutes ago but now we love each other” situation?

And that’s just the Gasroom!

I tend towards the view that if you’ve paid for a ticket you can moan if you want.

However, I also think it’s reasonable in our current position that players will feel pissed off at the lack of recognition their efforts have received from supporters.

They’re close to achieving the club’s first ever automatic promotion from the third tier, yet supporters are still moaning loudly at misplaced passes.

Our buildup is a bit slow and Norris in particular can be frustrating. But it’s obviously part of the plan to be very considered in possession inside our own half and make pass selection from goal kicks based on the way the other team are setup to defend.

With our very difficult fixture list I think our best hope is to go WWDD while Wrexham somehow go WWDL. Not out of the question, but I suspect one more defeat will be curtains.

Today was very tense and could have been so different if Kone scoread the sitter header.. Fred started the match really positively.

Scowen and Humphries were well belpw paey today and think scowen should have come off rather than simons.

Harvie is a huge miss but really feel that Leahy slows our play so much and just pumps long balls all the time , would 100% prefer reach there …

lets be positive , we have at least 4 cup finals ledt …come on you bluea !!!

There are people on here who think Wrexham are somehow rigging the league. If so, they can just go WWWW and it’s over.

But if they really have that power they will finish third and go up via Wembley, as that is far better for Netflix.

Which means they will let us finish second.

Our last 4 games are tough, but I’m not sure Wrexham have it any easier. Ok, you’d expect them to have too much for a very out of form Bristol Rovers, but could definitely see them dropping points at Blackpool and Lincoln who are both in good form particularly at home. My only worry with Charlton is that they potentially could be out of the reckoning by the time they go to Wrexham. If they’re not, it means they’ve probably beaten us!

A lot has been made about our run in but it’s ageing a bit easier with each passing week. Stevenage was a dead rubber for them today. Bolton have gone from automatic promotion contenders to suddenly bang out of form. Orient could maybe have nothing to play for by the penultimate day and it would take an unusual set of circumstances for Stockport to have something to play for on the final day. Perhaps Charlton will only have 4th / 5th (home or away first leg) left to play for too.

Same can be said for our game vs Stockport. Chances are they will be secure in the play offs come the final day and trying to avoid injury/fatigue ahead of those games.

Several good posts above. I will say that as Dodds has made us very difficult to beat, I feel more optimistic we can go unbeaten, even with some draws in there.

One of the strangest feelings this season has been going from wondering how anyone can keep us from scoring at least two, to wondering how anyone can score two against us (bar Rotherham). Both are strengths, but obviously at opposite ends!

Isn’t football wonderful? I don’t think anything in life can give you such a high as moments like today’s winner. Absolutely euphoric.

Such a frustrating watch against another very dirty Stevenage team who somehow got away with foul after foul. The referee absolutely pathetic.

We weren’t particularly great but I don’t think we were bad either. We got what we deserved.

As for the jeers? What jeers? Aside from a few moans when Norris did what he did (and I wouldn’t expect anything other than a few grumbles then) but I saw a completely united fanbase getting behind their team and really pushing them on despite it being a frustrating watch. So a little surprised to see comments that suggested otherwise.

I’m starting to believe again!

You should have been there when (redacted on legal advice as there’s a 0.001% chance my wife could see this)

No wish to do anything at this stage of the season - like so many others - to give anything other than the most encouraging support to all - on and off the pitch - to furthering Wycombe’s chance of automatic promotion this season.
So strange then to see eighteen highly capable players chosen and then deployed in a way which seems to impose a “hand brake” on their efforts. Little evidence of this being loss of energy, drive or confidence on the part of those selected. More a set up seemingly overly concerned with not conceding, undermining any sustained or potent attacks. Could see no tactical sense in having two such capable players as Scowen and Simons sitting for much if the first 45 only a few yards ahead of a back four scarcely troubled by two at most three pretty ordinary Stevenage forwards. In consequence, Kone, Udoh and Fred, rather isolated in no man’s land, seemingly incapable of keeping possession in the Stevenage half, still less get behind them with pace or purpose. Opening forays of second 45 showed how dominating we could be if advancing players with purpose. We got away with it today but why reduce goalscoring chances to the second half.

I don’t get the booing either, especially at a time when the boys are clearly as anxious as we are and it’s at a time in this long and brilliant season when we should now all be pulling together for the run in, we knew this would be a tough match against a very well organised Stevenage team, our coach knew exactly how to set this up and by his own admission he was hoping we would have scored before we actually did ,however, we won thankfully to Taylor’s 9ft legs ! Please can we now get behind the lads for the final few matches , whatever the line up is and whether we think it is right or wrong, let’s be loud and proud because we are WYCOMBE WANDERERS !!

As the end of the game approached the crowd were absolutely willing that ball into the net.

The only jeers I heard were when Norris took about five minutes to ping the ball over everyone’s heads into their keeper’s arms. Not ideal, granted, but it was an isolated moment.

But all that frustration was worth it for the moment the ball went in and the crowd exploded. Felt like about four games worth of tension was uncorked at that moment. Will remember it for a long time

For christ’s sake we have no chance of automatic promotion if we continue leaving Kone running around like a headless chicken on his own up front revert to a 3-5-2 formation and lets score more than one goal a game our defence is perfect but attack is hopeless !!

I never boo, and I love an exciting late goal but if we are not allowed to come on here and say ‘Mr Dodds and team that was somewhat of a lacklustre, quite gruelling performance that seemed to be lacking a cutting edge, reminiscent of the tenure of Mr Ainsworth rather than the early season bravado of Mr Bloomfield.’
What’s the point?

Such a strange day. Attendees insisting they got behind the team in a mass love-in. The team insinuating the fans are awful and need to get with the program. The Gasroom matchday thread being too honest in the moment and being pooh-poohed by those attendees who the players pooh-poohed for pooh-poohing them.

Totally behind the players comments. They’ve heard a few individuals moaning and have every right to respond and try and unite the crowd. The ‘turning jeers to cheers’ post from the club was rather odd though. Personally I didn’t hear any jeering or boos. I thought the crowd were supportive. Seems some took exception to the moans at Norris, but in fairness a few of the players clearly expressed frustration at that rather strange passage of play, wasn’t just a few in the crowd.
