Match Day Thread : Stevenage

Yeah - if one of my employees had a disgusting habit being picked up on national tv that plenty of people have picked up on after less than 15 games in charge then I’d have the bollocks to tell them to change.

Of course those that work in the football bubble might not quite understand that concept, if they think it’s just about results.

Out of interest @glasshalffull1 how do you think his record would look based on the style of football employed if taken charge of a team not sitting 2nd in the league?

Surely he’s not great because of his record so far just like he isn’t shit based on his Sunderland record last season?

Like it or lump it, ignore if you choose to, but it’s not been an enjoyable watch and if we do not go up this season then next season we are going to have even lower home fans than this season.

But what do I know? I’m not a professional footballer, commentator, journalist or member of a football club board. I’m just a mere mortal who’s watched this team for almost 40 years.

It seemed to me, sitting in the Family Stand, that, apart from the Norris incident, virtually all the groans and frustrations were actually being directed towards the ref, and the linesman on our side. And regarding the gum chewing, I couldn’t help notice that Kone was also guilty - downright dangerous whilst playing, I would say.

You say plenty of people have picked up on his gum chewing, when in reality, when we have thousands of supporters… its about 5 people on the gasroom moaning about it

Maybe I was a little OTT but I just do not understand making it us and them with your own fans? When I play in my university’s casual league for the mighty Physics FC in defence I accept that I am not professional, I will probably make a mistake and I’ll just own it and apologise rather than bitching to my own teammates/people watching that they’re being mean because they’re justifiably whining every now and then. We have one central defender that loves to just shout at people for anything they do wrong and then will proceed to royally cock up and we just stay quiet because it isn’t worth it with people like that, they’re usually projecting from something else in their life.

I would like to add that I am probably too positive about this club/Dodds compared to most on here (not throwing shade, each to their own) but I do not want to see a bad attitude running through the players directed towards fans (especially publicly) most of whom will have shown up when we were falling towards non league relegation only ~10 years ago. Hopefully they use whatever angst they have to win promotion and it won’t be over analysed more than it already has.

Groans are fine, that’s a natural reaction to disappointment, and I’ve had cause to groan a lot lately! Boos and jeers is premeditated criticism and I don’t understand why any supporter would want to criticise the players during a game. Surely they need encouragement when they make a mistake, or when the game is not going well for them. A ‘hard luck, keep going’ is what they want to hear, and might get them in a better mindset.

I didn’t hear any boos yesterday, like I did during Blooms’ time of struggle. If someone around me starts booing, I am likely to have a polite word!

Neither you nor I heard any boos yesterday. So where were those boos coming from. And why is an issue being made about it by both players and club staff?

A little disappointing to see after such a game yesterday where everyone seemed united as one.

Where I sit, I don’t think I’ve ever heard so much barracking before as I have in recent home games but it all seems to be directed at the negative way the team is set up rather than any individual players.

It’s disappointing but understandable that some of our players felt let down by boos from a few individuals for a few seconds. I was perhaps fortunate to be working over the weekends of the Morecambe and Fleetwood games last season (maybe less fortunate to have had a stomach bug for Orient away) so didn’t experience at first hand quite how bad genuine booing of the players had got, though like many here I thought the crowd was generally fairly positive considering how laboured a lot of our performance was yesterday.
Hopefully we can find a turning point and find our scoring touch in front of goal. Even if we put away one in every 8 or so chances I would back us to bag automatic promotion, our general play is objectively pretty good.

I would argue that shouting “that was a fucking Shit Pass Norris” is both a justified thing to shout as “That Save was world Class Save, Norris”.

“Hard Luck, keep going” doesn’t fit that particular situation because luck isn’t involved. It was an awful decision. Perhaps you would prefer “Excuse me Mr Norris, but I think the pass you selected was Sub-optimal given the options you had ahead of you and you really should be thinking a little be better and looking for players that were open”. However, “that was fucking shit” is actually less premeditated.

Just throwing my 2 pence in, This is nothing new, While trying to remember (google) a match, it was a real oddity that happened at AP, I think it was during Peter Taylor’s time , Scott McGleish came back to haunt us and scored and a large part of our fans cheered (all be it a bit sarcastically) and in doing so I stumbled on a thread in the BFP about that match and the comments was almost the same as this. “You may wonder why we have had three results away from home. Probably because the supporters/critics didn’t go and boo.” “Lets get behind them and silence the boo boys.” “The enjoyment of going to Adams Park to watch football is begining to be a chore rather than enjoyment.” (sic) And no mention of the cheering of Scott’s goal so maybe it was a different match.
At the end of the day we all want the best for our club and funny enough so do the followers of the opposition , we can’t both win and play amazing, we have had some players that could play at a higher level and some that are punching above their level. Some times they punched above their potential and some times have a bad day. Just like the players, us fans may not represent ourselves in the best light sometimes (a groan here and there for a bad pass or kick or even a cheer for the other team).
One negative statement I don’t understand, is some saying even if we go up the attendances will be lower. I’m sure the away ends will be sold out almost every match (not that it matters) I will be happy to say I’ve watched my team give a go in the championship since we all missed out last time.

I wonder if there’s pockets of the stadium where moaning fans congregate? Considering for the most part it wasn’t the most inspiring display, the fans around me on the terrace stayed supportive. I didn’t hear any booing or jeering, just a few groans for the Norris incident. Clearly their must have been more than a few dissenting voices for the club and players to be putting out these posts, unless perhaps it’s just a way to get the fans onside and more vocal in their support for the last 4.

We are 3 ahead of them in goal difference and i’m confident we won’t concede many in the next 4 games however there could be a 2 goal swing quite easily if Wrexham give a team a pasting. The extra goals is an extra point and could be the difference. They don’t score many but as we have seen they tend to have referees on their side so always possible . So if we are one up at Bolton yes hang on to the game but a gamble to score a few more in my opinion is worth it . Bolton fans will turn on their team i’m sure if we are one up and will encourage them to attack which will open the game up.

If we level on points with Wrexham (as things stand) we would be four goals (plus probably five due to goals scored) ahead of them.

If you find chewing a disgusting habit that is you’re prerogative but as it doesn’t affect the outcome of the game I think the vast majority of fans couldn’t care less since they are there to watch the players rather than the head coach.
Style of football is subjective, results are not and Mike’s points tally from 13 games would have us in contention for a top six finish in most seasons.
As you point out, he took over at a critical time and didn’t have a pre-season to get to know the strengths and weaknesses of the squad or to oversee the early part of the season when there is no pressure. He had to hit the ground running and keep us in contention for promotion and that’s exactly what he’s done. He is in a situation where results are more important than how they are achieved.
Like you I have been watching Wycombe for a very long time (almost 50 years) so remember the days when we played Tooting and Mitcham, Enfield etc, and I’m excited at the prospect that the ground could be full next season for the visit of clubs like Leicester, Southampton, West Brom etc.
As others have said, if that means four dull 1-0 wins and a gum chewing guy in the dugout that’s fine by me but you’re entitled to disagree.

You could hear some frustrated shouts from the crowd on WTV, one notable one was waiting an age for Leahy to take a throw-in near the end and you could hear some very loud and “colourful” shouts of “encouragement”.

Yup. It’s hard to stay chanting for 90 minutes when the play in front of you consists of cautious passing back to the keeper and knocking the ball around defence. If the players are picking up on grumbling from the stands I suspect it’s because everything is so quiet on the pitch. Give us moments of excitement and the energy levels rise for everyone.

The players should be grateful we have high standards and high expectations of them. No one has turned on them, other than a few coked-up dickheads still waiting for pubity to fully kick in. Any grumbling is more in sympathy at the dull style they’re being told to play. We saw their swashbuckling start to the season and know they can all do better, when let off the leash.

How the manager behaves has an impact on the players. Seeing Ainsworth kick every ball must have been inspiring. Seeing Dodds looking like a cow who is bored of cud can’t be very good.

(Ainsworth’s and Dodds’ win percentages destroy my argument. I just wanted to say that Dodds looks like a bored cow)

Let’s shout colourful encouragement to Luke Leahy.

“COLOURFUL ENCOURAGEMENT!”

I have just watched a very nervy win for an unconvincing Liverpool against West Ham. Proves how being so close to a major achievement can affect even the best team in the country.

Nothing wrong with chewing some gum. Just keep your mouth closed whilst doing it.
