How much of these stats could be a reflection the fact we have been behind and chasing the game in both second halves?
Thatâs the point. Weâre quite good once weâve given the oppo a head start.
The possession and successful passes stat can also be misleading. Hundreds of short, mainly sideways passes between the back three and the keeper can paint that picture. Especially when the opposition arenât bothering to press you as theyâre already winning.
For the record, I have always been happy to be a sustainable League One club with the odd chance of promotion and some cup runs as gravy. I have no idea why Lommy is filling our mouths with gold but if it improves our facilities I can live with it. What bothers me is buying a load of really good players that look presently like an Ainsworth team might steamroller. If we are buying to stay mid League One, it looks profligate, if we are buying to get promoted, I fear MD may not be the man to do it.
As usual, in true Gasroom tradition, I hope to be proved wrong.
One personâs good investment is another personâs high risk speculation which is likely to result in getting a fraction of your money back
thatâs true re: pen and Westergaard but essentially they should both have been scored and weâd probably have two points
1st for successful passes. Which are sideways and backwards. I wonder what the stat is for successful forward passing? Oh. And itâs boring.
Absolutely. I suspect Dodds actually recognised this fact in his recent post match interview when talking about being braver with the ball.
All the passing around at the back or going backwards increases both possession and successful passes but if your arenât willing to risk a forward pass into dangerous areas (which we did start doing 60 mins onwards) it means nothing.
Only Stat that matters is that end column which says âpointsâ. We have zero.
Come on oily, you should know football by now. Thereâs no probablies in football.
We probably should have started both games better and not conceded 2 goals before turning up. And if it werenât for Van Sas pulling off a worldie just after we scored our 1st vs Bradford, we definitely would have been 3-1 down.
No offence but this is meaningless. We generated 0.08 first half XG against Bradfordâs 0.84. 0-2 down at half time in actual goals. We generated 0.19 first half XG against Stockportâs 0.65. 0-2 down again at half time in actual goals.
Small sample size, but 0.08+0.19=0.27 first half XG for Wycombe. 0.84+0.65=1.49 first half XG for our opposition.
Our opposition have generated 5 times better chances than we have in the first half of the opening two games.
That once again shows that Dodds is not learning, as itâs the same symptoms weâve observed over the larger 20 game sample size where weâve scored 2 goals.
Start slow and negative - get punished.
Very easy to outperform opposition in data when 2-0 down and chasing a game against an opposition that sits in. Hence why I bang on about needing to normalise data before interpreting.
Must stress this isnât a personal attack. I love the data you often provide. But I am so hacked off with how we are approaching games under Dodds.
The sooner we get away from the outdated concept of goals winning games the better.
they actually started on the front foot yesterday and had 3-4 early corners. But then defended appallingly, rather than played negatively (imo)
The data can say what it says. My eyes tell me everything I need to know. Weâve gone 2 0 down in two games, the opposition has then sat back and weâve done what we should have done from the 1st minute.
I think this is the most annoying thing for me.
From what I can see we have the players to do very well. We are just letting ourselves down hugely in the first half. For me itâs clear there are two trains of thought here:
- Dodds is useless at setting the team up
- The number of signings we have made - especially at the back - means they need time to settle.
Going on the record of last season as well as this, I can whole heartily see why people are jumping onto option 1.
Being a slight optimist (yes, really, despite my usual coming across on this forum) I actually do think and hope that the problem is number 2 and things will get better and Dodds can do it. Thats why I am still giving him at least 10 games.
However, I am aware that the way we approached pre season games has a lot to do with the defensive unit not being gelled. I also hope we stick with the defensive unit that finished Saturday on Tuesday. We need some consistency, change the rest, but that back 4 (and gk) and maybe abbot in the 6 please.
It also makes me shudder when people suggest we need more signings especially in the defensive side. We canât just keep throwing new players at the problem.
That said, the RB/RWB is still a problem for me.
To be fair it was about 3 - 4 minutes that we started on the front foot. As soon as Stockport settled into the game that was that.
Agree. The first 5 minutes were good. I think that actually has been forgotten.
The problem is, Stockport then spotted our lack of right hand side.
I dunno. Beginning the game with Kone on the bench is very negative for me. We are not a threat from set pieces against Stockport County. Corey Addai has the best box management in the league because of his height. We have limited aerial threat without Caleb, Joe Low and Sonny Bradley. Thatâs why we went short. Still created naff all.
Donât disagree re Kone. But after his Goal and performance vs Bradford it would have felt harsh on Udoh to drop him - even for Kone.
Especially if we have to get used to him playing there if Kone is sold.
Was there anything said about Fink not making the bench btw? Heard he warmed up but just not selected?
Play your best players in their best positions.
Re Fink Dodds said he pick up a slight knock and probably wouldnât be ready for Orient game.
