It’s been something of a roller coaster ride this season for the Rams. After winning promotion, staying unbeaten with only four points dropped, it was down to earth with a big bang on the opening day of this season when they lost 7-1 at home to the Chairgirls. Melton (3), Watkins, Potter, Hill and Hoesli-Atkins were on target that day. Beaconsfield recovered well, with three successive victories, 2-1 over both Reading and Portchester, and 5-1 against Badshot Lea. They have a W5-D0-L4 record, with 21 goals scored and conceded, and have proved to be competitive but had a heavy 6-1 loss at home to Oxford City last week.
In the Cups, they lost 5-0 at home to tier 4 Chatham Town in the FA Cup and lost 2-0 at home to New Bradwell St Peter in the County Cup. They have come through two rounds in the League Cup, 6-1 against Chesham Devs and on penalties against Slough Town two weeks ago. They withdrew from the Combined Counties Cup after being drawn away against the Chairgirls.
We can expect to to see several ex-Chairgirls lining up for the Rams, such as Alix Todd, Katie Riddington, Freya Harris, Ruby Harris, Ashleigh Harte, Poppy Lloyd, Bonnie Messitt and Mia Parkin. Sarah Davern recently moved to Slough Town, Molly Carter hasn’t played for a few weeks, she may have departed. The leading scorers are Henna Hussain and Freya Harris, on six each, and Katie Riddington on five.
This is the final game before the extended Christmas break, and is the first of the return fixtures, even though we have yet to play Portchester, Southampton Women and Badshot Lea. The SRWFL policy of only releasing a handful of fixtures at a time continues to frustrate the players and coaches. They apparently do it because of the many cup competitions which have to be scheduled in. The National League manage to release a full season of fixtures and factor in several cup competitions. Of the other seven tier five leagues, five release a full fixture list at the start of the season. The two who do not, North East and London and South East, do at least publish fixtures a couple of months in advance.
8’, WW 1-0 BT. Watkins penalty after a handball on the line. Ref initially gave a corner but the lino changed his mind.
17’, 2-0, Potter running onto a through ball and slotting home.
This was a quality goal, passed it around them and then a defence splitting through ball. Lovely stuff.
HT 2-0, comfortable, plenty of possession but a bit reserved by us. Not many chances for either side, just the one for the Rams when Axelle juggled the ball on the line and managed to clear it.
48’, 2-1, caught out by a ball down the middle, good finish
53’, 3-1, Potter broke down the left wing and delivered a perfect pass for Watkins to tap in.
Carolan on for Harvey. The tempo has increased this half, more end to end.
64’, 4-1, Beaver header from a corner, which resulted from the keeper just getting down to a 25 yarder from Hennessy.
66’, 5-1, Hennessy crashes home a loose ball from a corner.
68’, 6-1, Watkins pen
Wardlaw on for Mulvaney.
Watkins replaced by Schofield.
Baker on for Beaver.
79’, 7-1, Potter shot parried by keeper for Schofield to steer home.
82’, 8-1, Hoesli-Atkins 20 yard free kick.
Potter shot against the post.
90’, 9-1, Schofield shot parried by keeper for a Melton tap-in.
Potter goal disallowed for offside.
FT 9-1. We upped a gear or two after break, crisper passing forward and very clinical finishing. I wouldn’t say it was an eight goal game, the Rams have improved since we played them, but they increasingly couldn’t cope with our forward play as the half went on.
Agree the scoreline was maybe a little harsh on Beaconsfield, but W3 were the better team throughout, playing the much better football. All credit to the team for continuing to push for more goals even when the result was beyond a doubt. The ref was getting a lot of agro from the Beaconsfield followers, but not sure he did a lot wrong from where I was watching.
I mentioned Molly Carter in the preview and she has left the Rams. She is now playing for QPR Reserves, where she already has a goal and an assist in her two appearances.
The attendance today was 71.
Now that I’ve watched the full replay, I see that we played better in the first half than I gave them credit for at the time. We did get away with a big one in the first half, their no 10 Hussain was in with a through ball and heading for a 1-on-1 with Axelle. She was called offside but was clearly onside by a yard, and was actually in her own half when the ball was kicked. As you say, we stayed hungry until the end, I think Kayla was onside for what would have been no. 10. I was a little apprehensive after the blank against Reading, but that was a reassuring performance.
I don’t know how the ref didn’t see the handball on the line, but the lino thankfully did from an acute angle. The arm clearly moved to the ball but no card was issued.
The Veo technology is interesting, how it manages to track the action correctly. With the wide angle lens you do need to watch on a bigger screen. When games are streamed live, it will need someone to add comments, such as lineups, goalscorers and times. I don’t suppose it’s possible to have a scoreline and time graphic, with the score updatable during the game. One day the club will have a dedicated media manager who can commentate on games, as well as do the socials and interviews.
I don’t remember ever seeing a free kick given from an opposition kick off either. Was it for a double touch?
Beaconsfield goals.
Yes, her foot is resting on the ball, she pushes the ball forward slightly, then kicks it. Not something I’ve seen before.
Edit - occurs at 1:44:30.
