Gwalia United were founded in 1975 as Llanedeyrn LFC, changing the name to Cardiff LFC and Cardiff County LFC, before adopting Gwalia United in 2024, the ancient poetic term for Wales. From 2001-2003 they were affiliated with Cardiff City, the men’s club. They played in European competition for seven consecutive seasons from 2003. In August 2025, they partnered with the University of South Wales, training and playing home matches at the USW Sport Park in Treforest. Over the past 20 years they have spent all but a few seasons in the Southern Premier.

After promotion again to the Southern Premier in 2023, they have finished 8th, 9th and, last season, 11th when they were relegated in unfortunate fashion, equal on points and goal difference with Wimbledon, but having scored two less goals. Their 22 points from 22 games was a very high ratio for a relegated team. It was a very dramatic last day of the season with four teams fighting to survive. Gwalia lost to an 87’ goal at Exeter City, which ultimately sent them down. Two of those teams, Hashtag and Wimbledon, played each other and drew 2-2 and the other, Cheltenham, won 5-0 at Billericay to take them to safety.

Twelve of last season’s squad have featured this season. So far in the league they have beaten Ascot United 6-0 away and Bournemouth Sports 1-0 at home, and lost 2-1 at Moneyfields last Sunday. In the League Cup they have drawn 1-1 with Cheltenham Town and lost 1-0 to Kidderminster Harriers. Top scorer is Esme Kilburn-Thompson with three, all scored on her debut on the opening day against Ascot.

Now in her eleventh season with the club, Welsh international Cori Williams-Mills was appointed Manager in January 2026 and was joint top league scorer last season with five. She has yet to appear this season. Their two home league games this season attracted attendances of 332 (Bournemouth) and 153 (Moneyfields).

10 mins. 0-1 great hit from gwalia player. Wycombe bringing on pressure playing it out from a goal kick.

13th min. 40 yarder from Arnott just tipped around the post.

0-2 31st min.

40th min. Bobby clearly fouled but not given. She is booked for handball for reaching for it.

HT. 0-2. We’ve been a bit rushed in possession, whereas gwalia more controlled. We’ve had chances, so not out of it.

Annoying loss for us. Gwalia were stronger and fitter, we were second best in every challenge. Keeper’s distribution was terrible. Frustrating thing is we’re capable of winning, that shot we had on 66 minutes would have been goal of the season if it wasnt for a great save.
