I presume you have counted Leytonstone, Ilford, Walthamstow, Dagenham, Leytonstone and Ilford, Redbridge Forest and Dagenham and Redbridge all as separate clubs also …
But you have included AC Monza from the Anglo Italian cup ??
Aye. As I say, included in the official history and was a final played over two legs mid-season.
There were a number of end-of-season overseas tours, which clearly involved the first team squad, that were perhaps more jollies than competitive matches.
This was also played over 2 legs, and whilst league matches were still happening.
I had six from memory looking at the league table top to bottom.
Boreham Wood
Tamworth
Brackley
Eastleigh
Braintree
Truro
Checked Boreham Wood first and I see we played them first in 1976.
I wonder if Martin O’Neill was aware of this when he was Wycombe manager?
He famously is very interested in crime, and serial killers in particular
I wonder if the Leavesden team was made up of staff or service users
Maybe some precursor to Joey Barton was in the lineup.
Spot on!
What about this gem from the history books
The problem is some opponents are always going to be tenuous based on the date, competition etc.
The away second legs against Pisteoise and Teramo were both played in June, five weeks after the Isthmian League season had finished.
Interesting Stuart Earp concluded his match report for the 3-0 defeat to Teramo with “Wycombe will have learned many things from this tournament, but above all they now know that a tour and competitive matches don’t mix.”
I think there’s an argument both for and against tbh.
My favourite three opponents from the early friendly matches are Stokenchurch Reindeer (1889), Idlers (1895) and Vampires (1896).
Brilliant read. Thanks to those who’ve contributed.
The 1975 Anglo Italian league trophy was Wycombe representing the Isthmian league as Champions, against AC Monza. Where as the 1976 competition saw 6 Top semi pro sides and Six Italian semi pro sides. Each English team played 2 games against Italian sides. The top two sides from the English and Italian groups met in the Semi’s. We just missed out in 3rd place.
I was at the Uganda game and it was quite hilarious at times. In bare feet, the visitors couldn’t stand up on the slippery turf.
I found the program from that match while looking for a good video. Full of adverts
