Alcohol free train then escort straight to the ground avoiding all those wonderful pubs. Doesn’t strike me as enjoyable as it originally sounded.

> Re. Altrincham trip. I seem to remember that our train had the royal engine. When we reached Oxford all the anoraks jumped off and rushed to take pictures!

I shared this on the old gasroom to Eddie Monsoon, it’s an amazing documentary on the football hooligans of train spotting.

I don’t give a shit about trains, but it’s my favorite piece of media, because the unintentional humour is way better than even the best Alan Partridge scene.

Sounds horrible, one of the best cities in the country and fans marched to the ground and were presumed as hooligans.

Most of the fans were just relieved the game was on. We went past a frozen ST Andrews on the special choo choo where Birmingham’s game v Alty had already been called off. I very much doubt if the tie was played now, it would have gone ahead. The playing surface at Bootham Crescent that day, was extremely hard.

Brilliant. Thanks for these attachments, Steve. Exactly what I was looking for. Interesting to see that that both coach and train were scheduled to arrive at about the same time, with the coach only leaving three quarters an hour before the train. Great also to see that a programme for the train trip was produced and included some excellent writing. I particularly liked the bit about not being ‘intimidated by others of less of intelligence’.

Thanks, Steve.Exactly the information I was looking for. Did you travel on all of the train journeys mentioned? I wonder how many can claim such a record. For me, it was just the first two to Runcorn and Bridgend

> Slightly not what you were asking, but as a young boy,one summer around 1970ish, we took a train from Wycombe to Bournemouth for a day trip without changing trains!
>
> I’d love to know what the route actually was, but at that time some trains went to Paddington from Wycombe as well as Marylebone.

I remember going on the Ercol annual beano to Bournemouth by train in the late 70s. Don’t recall the route. Got well lubricated in a pub called The Longest Bar In The South, and it was vey vey long. Also met the first Mrs Smith there, so not all good memories.

It’s not out of the question I’m remembering being on such an annual event. Although we definitely didn’t go to a bar, from memory we sat on a somewhat wet and windy Bournemouth Beach eating chips having walked down through the somewhat scruffy park.

I remember my 60 something grey haired mother came along to the game. She was an occasional supporter and fancied a day out. I have a photograph of her somewhere in the middle of that police escort.

> …This wasn’t rigidly enforced, and there was an awful lot of Fishtails, Parkers and Cromby Coats for a mild April day, in which the deep pockets were fully utilised. I remember one over ambitious Wanderers fans tried to smuggle in a couple of barrels of the Watney’s Party Sevens. The Police deemed this a step to far, and the elderly gentlemen had to put them in the old storage lockers at the station.

I was on the train that went to Alty
As stated there was a problem somewhere and the train had to make a massive diversion. We were due into high Wycombe hours late of course no mobile phones those days and I remember one of our party jumped off when the train made a brief stop at some station in the Midlands to make a quick phone call to his Mrs to pass a message on to everyone that we were delayed. If I remember rightly, he just about got back in the train as it was about to move off again.

I remember the old Cadburys chocolate machines that used to be on platforms, being raided legally and illegally at one of the stops, by frustrated fans.
