I see the iPad app has been updated - release notes say “Minor bug fixes and performance improvements”. Fails to mention that it’s now permanently stuck in portrait format floating in the middle of the screen, and impossible to fullscreen the playing video. Our incompetence knows no bounds.
I have got the same problem with my IPad mini. As you intimated not a good situation. I have deleted the app and installed it again with zero improvement. Hopeless.

I have A iPad mini and have the same issue, why do the app. Owners not check for issues we have found ?
