The recent massive increase in ads on this website is starting to make it unusable. It’s gone the same way as other forums and sites like the BFP, which is a real shame. I get that this costs money to run, but £5 a month is very steep for a football forum.
Looking into it!
If you have any screenshots you can share please do.
Thanks!
I think the main issue is that the advert locations aren’t pre-allocated (at least on my browser), so the page jumps around as you scroll and the advert loads.
There’s always an advert after the first post on a thread for me. And then they seem random too, so scrolling on a mobile is haphazardous.
Thanks for flagging, we’re working to try and reduce the layout shift and ad density.
There could be 26,543 adverts for all I care. It’s Friday and it wasn’t a dream that we signed Aaron Morley.
I was going to complain that all the adverts are about women’s pants but I suddenly realised that this site probably has access to browsing history
Strange
I do not see any ads
Is it because I am a subscriber? or
Is it because I run “No Script” & “Ghostery” on Firefox?
It’s because you’re a subscriber.
Unless you really can’t afford it, I don’t think you should see the £5 a month as merely buying ad free access to the website. Any surplus goes into player sponsorship and the women’s team.
Likely both. Subscribers get no ads but those extensions will also kill the browser request to our ad partner.
For me the subscription is all about the latter rather than stopping ads, I have plenty of other tools & awareness to reduce/eliminate ad intrusion into my browsing experience
The ad revenue we’ve made up until now is fairly negligible.
We’ve kept the ads running mostly to create a better value exchange for our subscribers, who get ad-free.
Otherwise it would just be a purely voluntary donation, even though that is how most subscribers probably regard it anyway.
As has been mentioned, any excess revenue, after covering hosting and software, is used to fund W3 live streaming, and player sponsorships.
But ultimately we see ourselves as custodians of a long running community. This is not a money spinning operation! So we will always want to avoid compromising the user experience with ads for non-subscribers too.
Please keep flagging issues if you see them!
Thanks for the reminder about subscribing. Have just done so.
I’m on here so much it makes sense. ![]()
The majority of posters seem to be here every day (me included). A fiver is very little for a site of this quality if you use it daily.
I remember the panic when gasroom 2.0 came to an end and we wouldn’t want that again.
£5 a month is very steep? Really? Cut out a coffee or Wycombe area pint once a month. Surely that puts it into perspective.
The work and creativity that @OxfordBlue and @bluequarters have put into this superb forum have made it one of the best (arguably THE best) in the EFL.
Predictably, the only slight gripe I have currently (and it’s a recent revision) is the difficulty, on an iPhone at least, of identifying usernames of those kind souls who have given me a thumbs up. I am constantly being told (in a pop up message) to wait anything up to a minute before performing the function (or whatever it’s called) again. I could just accept that x number of fellow Gasroomers approve of what I’ve said but it’s not all about vanity. I actually want to understand and build up my understanding of what sort of characters I’m corresponding with. People are endlessly fascinating.
Thanks @ArnosGrove . Took six taps and no pop up.
Don’t know if this video will help, but I tap on the number of likes, then tap on the icon.
Personally 5GBP a month is extraordinary value for what the Gasroom gives me.
I don’t want to speak for every subscriber, but if the ad revenue isn’t worth it i wouldn’t feel cheated if the Gasroom was ad free for everyone.
You raise an interesting point…as i’m sat drinking my expensive coffee right now, I could be getting a pint for cheaper somewhere in the country. Crazy how high the cost of a cup of coffee has become.
If you want to get more subscribers I would suggest removing the ignore function for non-subscribers. Not being able to shut out some (well just the one) of the more irritating posters would have sane people banging on your virtual door to subscribe..
(And no it’s not a serious comment)
