Barry Silkman

Does anyone remember much about Barry Silkman and his 8 (I think) games for Wycombe?

Came on as a sub for Harrow Boro against us in the FA Cup 1st Round in 00/01. I remember Sanchez saying when Silkman came on he knew they weren’t taking the game seriously.

I think it was Tooting at home in the 86/87 season, Wanderers were 3 or 4 up and Barry Silkman was substituted about 15 minutes from time, because he had a greyhound running that evening. He literally sprinted off the pitch, straight up the tunnel.

Didn’t Silkman challenge Sanchez to a sprint in the car park to prove he still had it?

I remember him running straight down the tunnel, although wasn’t aware of the reason.

At times Silkman looked world class playing for us. What a midfield of him, Noel Ashford and Andy Graham. I think Kevin Durham was injured during Silkman’s brief spell.

He says in his book, “I was told I’d been named in a fan poll for the best Wycombe Wanderers team of all time. After 8 games!”

That sounds like the sort of thing he wood say but TBF he was pretty good.

Rob Simpson partnered Noel Ashford in Midfield when Silkman scuttled off to the dogs.

That left the midfield, “Solid as a rock” !!

One for the oldies, TBF!

Barry Silkman played with his shirt out, and it draped over his shorts, similar to how Glen Hoddle and Micky Hazard used to wear them. He was very much a touch player, with an exquisite passing range, who at times looked out of this world, but his off the ball stuff and back tracking was non existent. He was great to watch during that short spell, but Alan Gane made the right call, in getting shot of him. There was a strong rumour that skipper Keith Barratt had called him out for his work ethic in the dressing room after what turned out to be his last game for the Blues, and had to be restrained. This further exemplified that Ashford and Barratt were Wanderers most important ever signings, ability and standards were a shining light as WWFC declared they wanted to be a major player once again, after years of stagnation.

Wonderful memories, I think. I was drunk as a skunk most matches.

And some great names from the past - Graham Bressington, Keith Barrett, Noel Ashford and Kevin Durham. Anyone remember Farnborough away when Bressington had to play in goal? Think he kept a clean sheets in a 0-0 draw if memory serves.

That’s right, he did. I remember turning up at the ground to hear that Gary Lester was injured and our most in-form midfielder was going to be taking his place! Confidence was not high. Don’t think Farnborough actually pressured him that much despite being fairly high up the table themselves.

Powerful centre half Dave Bullock started in goal for the Wanderers for 3 consecutive season between 1973-75. In the 1975/76 season Big Dave was in goal, two Saturdays in a row . WWFC won 3 and drew 1, when Dave Bullock wore the green jersey.

Did Andy Kerr play in goal in the late 80s? Got a vague memory of it and him doing pretty well but wondering if I’m imagining it
