Have I missed the topic. If so I apologise, but is anyone watching Bayo on Celebrity SAS. A credit to Wycombe Wanderers. Facing his fears, this is a different type of adversity. Troy Deeney also on the show and both and them do themselves great credit in what they have achieved as decent human beings.Well worth a watch if you have not seen. Airs on Channel 4 9p.m. Sundays.
I thought for a moment that our esteemed fellow Gasroomer, @Bayo, was competing.
They wouldn’t get one full episode out of a ‘gasroom SAS’ as we’d all be dead in 30 minutes from hernias.
Though the fight section in Ep 3 would be tasty…
I’ve seen one episode, Bayo driving an SUV to rescue a hostage. Turned right when he should’ve turned left straight into an ambush and got killed. Not seen anymore .
That was episode number 2. Worth watching the next episode when they get called in to face those in charge and go into Bayo’s and Troy’s backgrounds. Also Bayo boxes and tries to go underwater with limited success.
Bayo is a sizeable old man with a dodgy knee and these challenges aren’t natural for anyone but he always comes across very well, and the guy from love island wouldn’t have signed up for the opportunity to have him punching him in the face.
Just seen Bayo’s task, he looks really uncomfortable, I hope he keeps his nerve. Tbf, I’m be bricking it
SPOILER ALERT!!
Bayo has just handed in his number & withdrawn, his knee from his career held him back and it’s such a shame to see him crumble
For those of us planning to watch it tomorrow…could you add spoiler alert to your post Mr Otter?
Pulling out because they get shouted at and disagree with everything being asked of them…..that’s before any injury
SPOILERS
I thought the last episode was very distasteful. Firstly they exploited a poor girl’s sexual assault for entertainment and then brushed Bayo aside without a comment, it was only his knee that let him down. They pushed him to carry on even when he strained beyond the limits of pain. You could see him not wanting to give up but it looked like he was causing himself some serious damage.
I’m also left with a tinge of self repulsion after watching my first reality TV since the first series of Big Brother…
I enjoyed most of it and Bayo came across well (stopped watching after he went out) but they go overboard with all the posturing, These people aren’t getting called up to war ever and haven’t passed any fitness tests, and the boxing challenge was pretty distasteful with little interest in fair fights, They had an actual boxing champion and barely mentioned that he might have had an advantage. Bayo was probably an odd booking when you also have Deeney with some similar stories who they clearly wanted to win.
…and rehashing the Rebecca Loos stuff from decades ago??
I was also dubious about Loos before watching but I get her pain that she was dragged into the Beckham panto by a serious older shagger who was her boss…they close in to.protect the brand…she gets a tabloid reputation and he (gay icon turned supporter of Qatar and seller of air fryers) gets a knighthood.
The Beckham documentary seemed to blame the press rather than his inability to keep.it in his trousers
Actually, I often end up having my opinions (of the people I’ve heard of anyway) changed more positively.
Bayo fell victim to the dozy bloke leading who wanted him to shoulder all the weight but never asked about his knees ( which they must have known about.).
I agree the boxing bit is always dodgy though.
I need to get out more.
The point of the boxing isn’t about winning. It’s about being able to get back up and keep going even when the odds are stacked against you. AND to follow orders while under fire and your normal morals are telling you to run. Like you’re fighting an actual boxing champion.
They have, in the past put woman against man. Not because of the unbalance and ratings but because, in a war situation, you may well have to carry out acts you would usually vehemently avoid in day to day life (punching a women in the face/shoot a women that might be carrying a suicide vest/ak47 etc)
The boxing champion vs normal person is also a test of the boxing champion on how he reacts. He’s in a real fight - does he pull his punches and go easy, give the appropriate level of violence to win, or go massively over the top like he’s fighting for a world championship?
In the Special Forces world they are very much expected to be able to carry out extreme level of violence when called upon- but it must be controlled and justified.
The boxing task is a great way to put (most) people outside of their comfort zone and see how they react in a hostile Situation. It’s never about winning/losing.
If we have to call up people from Love Island, knackered ex footballers and a 50 year old former nanny who might have slept with a footballer once we’ve lost already.
