Enjoy Steve! I hope you find time to tear yourself away now and then…
It’s been available for quite a few months now, so much better than trawling through decades of microfilm!
Will it reveal the hidden secrets of the Nose Club?
I shall try and find the late December 1997 edition where I’m in the Wycombe hospital team visit photo. ![]()
Nothing to do with the archives but I’ve just read a reference in the BFP online to a 4-0 thumping against Port Vale. The writer, who has had a few problems previously with the English language, obviously meant a 4-0 thumping of Port Vale. Carelessly misleading to the casual reader.
Mike - he also said we “smashed” them which also is an exaggeration.
I do have another Wanderer Fanzine for you and will drop it in soon.
I’d call 4-0 a thrashing but not a smashing. When does a thrashing become a smashing? 6-0? 7-0?
Let’s hope we defenestrate Stockport on Friday.
A thrashing is a thrashing. You must be getting confused with a smash and grab.
Smash and grabs are only away from home, normally midweek.
Just seen your post, Alan.
Thanks as always for dropping in the Wanderer. Much appreciated.
We did batter the living sh*t out of Reading recently in a 3-2 defeat…
I’d consider a thrashing to be any win by a four goal margin or more. It irrationally irks me if a 3-0 is described in such terms.
The Scots call a wide-margin victory a ‘pumping’ don’t they? That makes me chuckle for no real reason. I’ve also seen thrashings described as ‘humpings’, which is a bit after dark for my taste.
Spanking?
What about a drubbing?
I’d never heard that but i’m going to start using it.
Spanking, drubbing, walloping - all acceptable.
I lean towards thrashing, thumping, bashing, drubbing, spanking, pummeling, smashing, trouncing, battering, clobbering, whipping, whomping, whupping, hammering, pasting, licking, routing, lashing, caning, skinning, pounding, shellacking and walloping starting with a five goal margin.
Tonking?
My Scots learnt by osmosis from Rab C Nesbitt is pretty ropey, but a “pumping” is pretty much the same thing as a “humping” south of the border.
