If you like Slow Horses then I implore you to read Mick Herron’s The Secret Hours. I will say no more and you can thank me when you’ve read it

Happy Slow Horses Day to those who celebrate.

I will have to wait for it to build up. Which is why I’ve only just started Silo.

Incredible restraint. Last series of Silo was outstanding.

I’m listening to it at the moment via audiobook on Spotify, it’s brilliant

Yes it is. Im about 75% through it. I’m curious as to what conclusion Jon will reach - assuming he closes with one.

Mine is, not surprisingly, we live in disaffected times, as many have done before. Social media exacerbates the disaffection in order to profit. Not always through a desire to create hate and extreme behaviour as an end in itself, although in some cases it is. Rather because hate and rage and taking it one step further keep people on the platforms and in turn give them a platform to express that.

The abnormal becomes the new normal.

The idea of men wanting in a way to return to times past, whether good times, fun things with the kids, being part of a community with a job, or bad, being Hugh Hefner or fighting (very misguidedly in my opinion) for a cause, is interesting. And troubling as it plays out here, enabled by social media and the collapse of boundaries.

I’ve finished The Secret Hours, thanks @Ohandybaird - great recommendation. Need something new to read now though.

Emily St. John Mandel has a new novel out this month. Haven’t got it yet but she’s rarely less than brilliant.

Glad you enjoyed it. It was the monthly read at the Hughenden Village book club. Probably not great for those who don’t know Slow Horses

I reckon it stands up on its own. I’d always steered clear of Mick Herron’s books for fear of Slow Horses spoilers, but this had some beautifully deft overlap without spoiling anything. And I have to say, Herron has a real way with words - some superbly crafted sentences in there.
