Who do we think should be released/ loaned out, who should we keep and who should we buy/loan in the January window?
Not sure there’s a must-keep in the entire squad at the moment. Maybe Henderson, possibly Lowry. Even Dan Harvie looks half the player he was under Blooms.
I’d keep a few jinky boys and bring in a spine of steel and experience to help steady the ship and develop what we’ve got. Boyd-Munce, Mullins, Henderson and Lowry have enough about them to bring something different to the team
I’d cut the Danes and Fink. Even though that’s flushing away most of the Kone money so far, beware the sunk cost fallacy!
Send Woodrow back (Luton really stitched us up there), Loan out Fink to a League 2/National League club and get in 2 strikers. Send van Sas on loan to get some games and bring in an experienced keeper to challenge Norris. I would keep Anders but try and get rid of Magnus. Finally I would get rid of Tilley, Back and Mullins. Replace with hardened Championship/League 1 players.
I think Anders and Magnus will probably leave, but I’ve thought that before.
There’s zero chance of Van Sas or Fink going on loan to L2 or the National League, but one or both might return to the continent. The formers situation probably depends on what’s going on with Shamal George and whether he plays between now and then.
I’d like to keep McNeilly and Bell, but I don’t know how likely that is.
I may in a massive minority but I don’t want to see many changes at all.
I don’t want us to be a club that throws money at problems as soon as they appear. Arguably I think that is what has caused us to get into this situation. I want us to be a club that builds a team rather than buys a team.
Duff seems like a decent manager to me, and we must have some decent coaches somewhere within the masses that populate the bench and academy. I would rather see them coach and nurture a team out of the resources we have. There are some good players in there somewhere - so let’s do things the Wycombe way. Build a team spirit and nurture them.
I am already struggling this season with not having much of a personal connection to many of the players. I fear this would be even greater if we go and have yet another churn of players
Agreed. Let’s get a big nasty experienced centre back and hard tackling midfielder and let the rest develop.
Well we know that at least 1 player will need to leave to give us a hard tackling midfielder and capable Centre Back as we only have 1 space left in our squad.
I think Westergaard is the most likely to leave. I rate Anders and think he can still play a part in our squad. Tilley & Woodrow are likely to move on to make space for the players we need and give us further options.
I’d completely forgotten about Tilley until i read about this fella the other day
It may depend on how we do in the Cups but if we got to January and we are out of all the cups then a trimmed down squad would help. I think we should be looking to do the right thing for both the club and the player but ensure we have back up/cover in every position.
I’d loan out the following players for experience:
Van Sas, Shala - may need to recall George but we do have Moore and Norris
Back
Mullins, Cole
Tempted to add Quitirna to this list, I do not see him starting due to his defensive side and us being so weak. However, should we really strengthen midfield and defence it may allow us to have more of a luxury player.
I’d look to sell/loan out the following with a view to a permanent move elsewhere:
Hagelskaer
Westergaard, Tilley
Fink may still get added to this but I think there might be something in there if he can stay fit - jury out.
I am not a huge fan of Norris but think money could be spent elsewhere and Duff’s pragmatism may suit him better. His playing experience maybe vital as we try to move up the table.
In terms of our loanees then if we sign a focal point up front or can get Fink fit and firing then Woodrow, Bell and McNeilly may all become really good options alongside a proper #9. I have it in my head Woodrow was an absolute handful playing off the last man but we’ve not seen that yet.
Abbott may return due to injury and Huggins has been a bit Jekyll & Hyde so happy for him to return or stay but depends on Skura as well. Can Skura provide cover to Grimmer out wide?
As others have said we could do with a L1 center back like Bradley or Low who can add a bit of steel. We need a back up for Scowen or a starter so Josh can ease his way back in. Any players we recruit also need to ideally add some height and strength to the squad.
Not necessarily. We currently have a 21-man squad so have one place available.
Shift - almost anyone for the right fee
Bring in - better players.
Simple.
I’d definitely feed that subroutine into the Rice Football Manager Algorithm.
It’s difficult to make meaningful assessments on so many of the players we’ve signed because they haven’t been given a chance to show whether they’re good enough or not. They have ten weeks to do so.
I agree with the sentiment of @Rasputin - the break-up of last season’s squad was totally unnecessary and those responsible should be utterly embarrassed at their own incompetence. What their motivation was in doing so can only be guessed at.
The consequence is that further changes are necessary in January and Michael Duff needs to be given the players he wants to form the spine of his team. Those players will need to be experienced and therefore won’t be cheap.
The squad is so ridiculously bloated. If half-a-dozen players are brought in, we would have a first-team squad of 40 players.
25 is usually the figure quoted by managers as the ideal number of players in a first-team squad. Therefore 15 would need to be moved on, either on loan or permanently.
For me those 15 are likely to be:
Stuart Moore
Laurie Shala
Fin Back
Niall Huggins
Declan Skura (or Dan Casey)
Jack Matton
AN Other central midfielder
George Abbott (I think the decision will be made for us)
James Berry
Ryan Cole
James Tilley
Magnus Westergaard
Jaiden Bartolo
Brody Peart
Cauley Woodrow
All this debate illustrates is - what a fucking mess.
Surely Abbott stays? If he’s only likely to play the final couple of months of season no other club will want to bring him in.
It says something that I haven’t the foggiest idea who Ryan Cole is.
I have a feeling Spurs will want to play and monitor him as part of their under-21 squad once he’s fully recovered from quad surgery.
Ryan Cole is a left-footed defender / midfielder signed from Newmarket Town, announced the same day as we signed Sonny Bradley on loan from Derby County.
I had to look on the club website but even that doesn’t give much information about him.
Unfortunately what you’ve stated in black and white here hits hard. And you can only laugh otherwise you’d cry
