Bell for me today, amongst that off tempo performance.
Bell worked hard but with little impact, Grimmer was solid, other than that very few enhanced their reputations or stood out
Difficult to award anyone, but if we had 11 players putting in Grimmer’s level of effort and passion we wouldn’t have lost, so gets my vote
I thought Junior put in a much improved performance this evening compared with his last appearance when he seemed to twist and turn very trickily but without making much forward progress. He was much more direct tonight.
Got to say I didn’t see that from Junior tonight. Didn’t think he offered much when he came on but hey we all see things differently
Jack Grimmer for me, the only one who put in any real effort.
If everyone gave the effort that Jack gives we could walk this league. We have players with undoubted quality. Lately they just look lost out there and scared to drive to the box or attempt decisive final pass.. just back and forth across midfield or play it backwards. So bloody frustrating
Could only be Grimmer tonight. Some decent play and maximum effort.
A thought on Taylor though. Reading various comments it’s clear that a lot of fans just don’t rate him. Personally I can’t see what the issue is. Apart from that horror 45mins against Barnsley he looks a good, solid defender to me. Decent in the air, reads the game well, comfortable on the ball. Nowhere near as good as some other centre backs we’ve had in recent seasons, but he’s young and improving. Really don’t understand where the problem is with him?
I agree it’s just the odd moment at the back when he looks like bambi on ice as the last man when he has very nearly lost the ball .
Agree about Taylor. He is solid ion the air. He has obviously been told to keep it simple to avoid any slip ups. That said, he tends to slow things down at the back with his simple cross ball passes. If he could distribute the ball forwards a bit more and quicker, he would be a much better player. His passing cant be any worse than a number of them last night.
I hope he’s improving and I really want him to. The rest is an attempt at a critique rather than trying to pile-on!
Like others have said, I can’t relax when he has the ball or when it’s coming to him, he never looks comfortable when receiving it - at one point yesterday a pass to him rolled over his foot when trying to control it. That happens to lots of players but that’s terrifying when it’s the last line of defence.
Too often his square passes are half a yard behind the person he’s giving it to, making them turn backwards and slowing/preventing us getting the ball forward quickly. That may be a technical flaw or a lack of confidence, or caused by the fact he’s slow to get the ball under control so the opposition are able to press more, meaning the next pass has to go backwards to stop it being intercepted. All coachable, I’m sure.
The thing that really bothers me is his heading! He loves a header and flies in to them but never seems to direct it. He wins so many headers easily and he has the time to turn them into headed passes but he just seems to want to smash it anywhere with his forehead. It could be a real weapon in retaining possession but too often turns into a turnover.
We have some very tall players none of whom seem to be able to head a ball around the opposing goal bit of a worry.
So glad I am not alone in thinking this. This has been doing my head in (
) for weeks. We have been so blessed with aerially gifted central defenders in the last 3-4 years that I forget what it’s like to watch less capable ones. The frustrating thing with Connor Taylor is that the rest of his attributes and traits do not make up for his lacklustre aerial ability. He’s totally mediocre at this level. Really annoying we spent so much on him. Additionally, one league goal from 8,000+ league minutes in League 1 is utterly dreadful for a 6’5 centre half.
Jack Grimmer for me. But I agree with @micra in respect of Junior. Thought he looked very good.
That’s my thumb. We’re all anonymous now. Not sure if the overall given/received stats will be automatically updated.

Gotta be Grimmer. Rock solid and dependable with most of the team way off their best. A great captain who leads by example.
