Match Day Thread : Bradford

Yes we need a Scowen or a Curtis Thompson to add some bite - I’m encouraged Doddy acknowledges that as it’s counter to his tippy tappy preference, although why it’s taken till now is baffling.

I’ve felt Cpt. Jack has been on borrowed time for some time, as a senior pro he should be bringing calm and direction not just effort and commitment.

If the Dane had taken his sitter a draw away against enthusiastic promo side with an intimidating atmosphere would have been more than satisfactory.

Plenty to work with on show, oh and more Junior game time please Doddy.

Excellent post, @James apart from describing CBM as Mince !! Incidentally, the fans’ chant for him at St Mirren was “Boyd Munce in the middle of the team, Boyd Munce” so it does look like he’ll have the pivotal role.

As is well known, I’m one of Jack Grimmer’s greatest fans but I do share the reservations about him as a player in the new setup that a few have been expressing lately. There’ll be plenty of competition at right back not least from Fin Back who, according to Wikipedia, is 6’2” - I had no idea he was that tall, if indeed he is.

The quick slick passing and movement off the ball are very obviously fundamental to the Mike Dodds style and, especially when CBM and Henderson are back and Harvie is fully up to speed, I think we can look forward to some highly entertaining football.

I apologise to Boyd Munce unreservedly

Yes Eric. Every time Fred got the ball he was fouled but we didn’t do the same thing to their dangerous winger who ran us ragged. Reminded me a bit of the Warnock days where we played pretty football but got out muscled and lost all the time. To naïve in my opinion. Didn’t help matters when the referee is so biased against us. Looking at the yellow card count you would think it was us that were the dirty team. As for the penalty shout. I remember him giving a really soft penalty against us in the last minute away to Oxford.

I also thought the Danes showed promise in an underwhelming team but kept my counsel as others seemed to think they were crap.

I assume they are hoping Josh will eventually provide the steel. Nice to see Harvie getting stuck in as well.

First game gone, lessons learned. Onwards and Upwards.

On a side note, thought the new home shirt looked really nice in the flesh for those fans lucky enough to have been able to have purchased one.

And I agree with everyone about the away shirt on the players, impossible to make out the number.

You can’t read either the name or number, suspect they’ll have to adapt kit.

My overriding concern remains, post forcing Blooms et al out the door, little if any actual mens football lower league know-how in the building.

Genuine question, other than the ref needing to see number/name, what is the actual reason for (a fan) needing to see the name and number (in regarding to having to adapt it)?

I rather suspect it’s pretty low down on the list of priorities to sort this side of finding a winning team. Unless your a commentator

Why does this issue need addressing? It should already have been addressed, shouldn’t it? Mike Dodds, Dan Rice and Tom Stockwell knew Caleb Taylor, Joe Low, Sonny Bradley and Xavier Simons were leaving months ago, didn’t they? They knew Josh Scowen wouldn’t be fit for months, didn’t they? It’s a fundamental failure in their recruitment plan, isn’t it?

It wasn’t easy on TV working out who was on the ball.

The window does not shut until 1st Sept . We don’t even know what this week will bring . They tried to get Connell and they are trying to get Taylor . I think It’s a little premature to be claiming there is a failure afoot. You could say the same for every other team who lost yesterday and have now decided they need to bring a couple more players in due to certain weeknesses being exposed in the first competetive game of the season.

I’m not sure the ownership group/management deserve much credit but they managed to get in most of the key players early which should have given us a major advantage.

There are two players missing though - that defensive midfielder and another central defender.

In their defence it is not easy to get all players in. They tried with Connoll and may still get the players in before end of window.

The season started on 2nd August. Unless we’re writing off the games this month. Bit of a risky strategy if you ask me.

At Barnet the other night it was very easy to mix up players, particularly new or rarely seen ones. Hopefully they are getting it over and done with and we’ll see a lot more of the Blue and Yellow shirts.

Bradford fans confirmed they have had a habbit of dropping off when in the lead even during their promotion run but we gave them some scares second half, lots of room for improvement in the creative positions as much as in steel. Negativity to be expected after an opening loss after the back end of the year but it’s probably just as honest as those desperate to talk up performances of individual players.

Three points lost won’t decide where we finish but it will put doubt into Dodds about how much change is needed next week and pressure will build. Personally think we need more than one system and the ability to go for it or tighten up depending on the scenario so at least the second half improvement was welcome if a little exaggerated.

I think the jury is still out on who our key players are.

Of course. When I said “key players” I meant “key areas”.

Like I said I don’t think we are the only ones. Don’t think it is from a lack of trying ( Connell, Taylor).

Could be any number of reasons. These things don’t always go exactly how you want them to go

I liked a lot of what I saw and heard yesterday and I think with another few additions we could be in for an excellent season

I’m struggling to recall starting a season under Gareth Ainsworth where he’d failed to include some steel in his squad, even with comparably meagre resources. Maybe things went exactly how he wanted them to go, or maybe he just got lucky.

Depends what you mean by steel. Because I’d argue there is plenty of steel in the squad including absent players yesterday - just lacking a couple of players. Especially under Ainsworth we lacked several players at the start of the season, our squads were exceptionally poorly assembled at the start of seasons.
