Match Day Thread: Fulham 7th Oct 2025 (EFL Trophy)

A winning draw at Gills would see us through. We’d need to win the shoot out for the bonus point.

The kick off time would certainly help but it’s essentially a training game that’s also live on Sky. I’m surprised 500 turn up to be honest.

Ah yes, forgot about that ‘innovation’. But us vs Gills is essentially winner takes all; only one will qualify whatever the result.

No thanks

I thought Lowry had a good game last night, you can tell he is young and quite raw but his natural talent and confidence to get the ball and try make things happen goes without saying. Reminds me of a young Anis when he first got the nod. He needs to beef up a bit and his end product will only get better. Not saying a starter but i feel he should always be in the match day squad.

I know he hasn’t played a lot of football over the last year but not sure Fink is going to score many goals. Woodrow doesn’t exactly stand out as a prolific goal scorer from early evidence. I think this is a major issue for us going forward.

Surely you haven’t forgotten that some of us see the games involving the Premier League U21 teams differently to the games involving real teams? There were nearly 1,000 there for the Col U game, for instance.

I thought Westy put in a decent shift in the second half and gave some of that physicality that Duff has been after. But true, these were only U21’s. But I guess you can only play what is put in front of you.

For me McNeilly should now start. Probably off the attacking right side. I agree that neither Fink or Woodrow are going to be prolific but Woodrow’s overall game and experience has him well ahead of Fink who still looks like a development player to me.

I would like to see a 4231 on Saturday -

MVS

Grimmer, Anders, Allen, Harvie

Abbot, Leahy

McNeilly, Henderson, Bell

Woodrow

Bench.

Norris, Casey, Huggins / Back, Lowry, Fred, junior, Boyd.

If Abbot is injured then bring in Boyd. I’m presuming Mullins is unavailable.

I don’t want to pay to see Wycombe against an under 21 side out of principle. That said the 7pm kick off is just plain daft. It doesn’t encourage any extra under 16s to attend and puts off fans who can’t get home from work in time.

The competition is beyond saving, and needs to be abolished, unless everyone is happy for it to trundle on in its current form, which is merely a training and squad rotation exercise, propped up by Premier League cash and crappy sponsors.

It should be switched for something that is genuinely competitive, innovative and interesting for supporters. It is none of those things.

I’ve said this before but I’d switch it for a straight knock-out competition, where teams play regionalised early rounds, before going into a seeded international draw against Scottish Championship/L1/L2, Irish, Welsh and perhaps even French or Nordic teams. It would take a lot of organising but at least it wouldn’t be a pointless, dull affair that only the finalists feign interest in each year.

Great…we play a Danish team next year and their fans spend the whole game laughing at two of our players

To be honest i’d forgotten there’s no such thing as a draw in the group stage anyway. The dizzy euphoria of last night’s unforgettable win obviously got to me.

Penn tonight. IT’S THE REAL THING.

I struggled for a moment or two to figure out who Bench and Boyd were. Indeed, I thought desperation might have set in and that the former was our worthy fellow Gasroomer.

I love Boyd-Munce both as a footballer and a personality and would like to see him starting on Saturday. I would obviously like to see Skura involved, if only from the bench, but that is unlikely of course because it is quite rare for central defenders to be substituted, much as we would have liked to see it against Barnsley.

McNeilly and Lowry should be nailed on starters. The former reminds me of prime Fred.

To play Mcneilly you’ll likely need wing backs. Ypu don’t want him wasted on the wing.

I like Anders but he is left sided and not sure hes over Allen yet. Skura could play over Grimmer at a push.

I think we need to move away from playing 3 at the back. Players from Lower Championship clubs to NL all struggle with it and we need to bin it off quickly!

My apologies. I thought you were Bench.

I think an attacking Mid & strikers that include McNeilly (Right), Bell (Left) and Lowry or Henderson (Centre) will scare many clubs and give them a lot to think about. Get the wingers playing as Inside forwards, cutting in and making it a front 3 rather than a lone striker formation to give more options. Then we get the Full-backs pushing on and over-lapping to offer the crosses and width, we’d be laughing!

If we play that formation, we’ll need Woodrow to play much further up the pitch and be on the shoulders of the oppo’s CBs

I was surprised to see Anders playing left back last night. And Skura, essentially right footed, in the centre but also straying left and right as needed, as he always does. He’s always composed and confident.
