Abingdon United were formed in 2017 and they won the Southern Region Premier in 2022-23, to win promotion to the National D1 SW. They finished fifth in their first season at tier 4, followed by 9th and 6th places. Last season they had a W8-D5-L9 record, F 33 A46. They gained one point in their league cup group, and lost 4-1 at Worthing in the FA Cup 1R.
This season they lost all three league cup matches. In the FA Cup they won 5-0 at Tonbridge Angels before losing 6-0 at home to Bristol Rovers in the 1st Round, having lost 2-0 to them at home in the league earlier on. In the league they currently lie 6th, three points behind the Chairgirls, after winning four and losing three. Those wins were 2-1 v MAP (H), 3-2 v Keynsham (H), 5-2 v Maidenhead (A) and 2-1 v Ascot (H). That win against a much changed Ascot side, from when we played them the week before, was thanks to a 82’ penalty.
This season Erin Hartigan is top scorer in the league with four. Molly Lygo has been scoring regularly for Abingdon since 2018, she has two so far this season, last season she top scored with 12 in the league.
Last season we played Abingdon United in the B & B at Burnham, Watkins gave us the lead on 34’ with a penalty, after Potter had been flattened. United equalised with a Hartigan shot on 62’. It went to penalties and we lost 6-7. I noted at the time that Abingdon had a very effective press and were a very physical side, in particular Hodges who was having a right old tussle with Melton. I am very pleased that Mimi will be on our side this time, wherever she plays! Potter and Watkins did hurt them down the wings, Watkins and Makowska are proving very effective down the wings this season.
Current Abingdon players Kara Howes and Emily Norfolk are ex-Chairgirls and, of course, Mimi Hodges and Caitlin Crierie are ex-Abingdon. Others to have representd both clubs include Lindsay Pinker, Hannah Cox, Steph Mobbs and Beth Chapman.
Incidentally, goalkeeper Keira (Kiera?) Maskell is in their squad, after joining in the summer from Oxford City, and has two starts to her name this season. Could she be related to our goalkeeping legend John Maskell, also from Oxford?
I will post an updated table as Moneyfields won 1-0 at Bournemouth Sports last night, Maidenhead won 5-1 at Ascot on Tuesday night.
I will only be able to catch the last 20 or so minutes tonight, any score updates would be appreciated.
The match stream is now live!
Bit of Abingdon pressure at the start but all W3 after that. Mimi in midfield today. Nearby house let off fireworks just before kick off but no fireworks on the pitch yet with 14 mins gone.
Bobby 35 yarder tipped wide on 22 mins.
1-0 to Wycombe on 35mins. Sorry not sure who scored it. Nice run and finish.
Edit to confirm goal scorer.
I think it was Arnott, based on her starting position, rather than any recognition from my small screen.
HT 1-0 to W3. We’ve been the much better side, although havent created too many cast iron chances.
Abingdon bench very vocal, calling for everything real and imaginary.
Abingdon shot just wide on 59 mins. Probably their best chance so far.
Beaver header just wide on 72.
Harney has replaced Hodges, Mulvaney replaced Watkins.
Pen for w3 on 76. Nat wiped out.
Arnott with the conversion, she can’t stop scoring!
Carolan has replaced Peters.
Incredibly late tackle on w3 player, somehow no card.
Someone on w3 bench booked for something said. 90+2
