For the fourth time this season the Chairgirls face a higher level club, so far with a record of won two and lost one, the latter only on penalties. United won the Southern Region Premier in 2022-23 and have since finished fifth and ninth in the National D1 South West. They are currently fifth this season, with a W3 D2 L4 record, six points behind Bridgwater United, who beat Abingdon 2-1 two weeks ago in the league, coming from behind. Last weekend Abingdon won 2-1 at Worthing after losing 4-1 there in the FA Cup 1st Round.

Top scorer and main threat is Molly Lygo with 9 from 14, she was top scorer last season with 9 from 24. She can score with shots from outside of the box. One United player well known to us is Kara Howes, our previous captain who left W3 in September 2023 for Oxford United, two games into the season. She had been an important defender and leader for us in the previous two seasons, and she played a big part in the Oxford United Development side’s triple winning season before joining Abingdon in June 2024.

The teams last met in the B & B Quarter-Final two seasons ago, almost to the day at Burnham, when the Chairgirls lost 2-1. Molly Carter gave us the lead after the break but United scored two goals in the last 12 minutes. Abingdon will be favourites but this will no doubt be a close game.

Abingdon have had four shots in the opening minutes, two needed saving. They are playing long balls to their mobile strikers. Howes, normally a left back, is playing right back, maybe because Kayla is left wing.

20 minutes in, no score and we are more in the game now.

Baker defensive header lands on top of the bar, Cullen safely collects.

Both keepers needing treatment, theirs in 50/50 clash with Potter.

Pen to the Chairgirls, Potter flattened chasing a Watkins cross.

34’, Watkins converts, 1-0 to the Chairgirls!

Baker heads just over from a corner.

HT 1-0, this is a very physical battle, in particular their no. 18 Hodges is roughing up Melton at every opportunity. The ref gives some as fouls, some not. After a rather tentative start we started putting pressure on them with several fine runs down the wing by Watkins and Potter, who are outpacing the full backs. I get nervous every time Abingdon attack, they have dangerous strikers who shoot from distance whenever they can. Cullen not seriously tested yet, nor their keeper.

Courlander on for Cullen at HT.

61’, Mulvaney on for Carolan.

62’, 1-1, shot from 8 yards into corner.

Scorer was Hartigan.

Great save by Courlander at near post.

73’, Ashby on for Baker.

86’, the ref finally shows a yellow to Hodges! Still 0-0.

*1-1

Yes!

Great block by Lynch in added time.

FT 1-1, dreaded pens now.
