Maidenhead United Women were formed in 2008 and were promoted to the National League D1 SW in 2015, and have been there ever since. They achieved their best finish of 5th last season with a 7-8-7 record, scoring 37 and conceding 35. Top scorers in the league were Izzy Stockton (9) and Megan Harper (6), both still at the club.
Last season they were knocked out in the FA Cup 3QR by Worthing, and progressed to the League Cup Plate knock-out phase, where they beat Bridgwater 2-1 but lost to Moneyfields on penalties in the last 16. They went through to the knock-outs despite losing all three group matches, but a 6-1 defeat to Wimbledon was awarded to United due to an ineligible Wimbledon player. In the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup, they lost 2-1 to Ascot United in the Final.
The last competitive meeting was a 2-1 away win for United in the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup in 2019-20, a competition cancelled due to lockdown. The last league meeting was in 2011-12, in the Southern Region Premier, when the Chairgirls were playing at Bells Hill, Stoke Poges. United won both games. We have met in recent friendlies with wins for United, 4-0 in July 2022 at Burnham and 7-0 in July 2023 at Bisham Abbey. The Chairgirls won both Sponsors Cup meetings, 1-0 in May 2023 and 3-1 in May 2024 when Axelle scored two goals.
This season in the league, United started with two defeats, 4-0 at home to Moneyfields and 1-0 at Bridgwater, but had a very good 2-0 win at Bristol Rovers last Sunday. In the league cup they lost 5-2 at home to Swindon on Wednesday.
Manager Dave Kitson was appointed in July 2025 and had immediate success in steering them to their highest ever league position. Kitson was a striker scoring 145 goals in 472 professional appearances between 2000-14, with Cambridge United, Reading, Stoke City, Middlesbrough, Portsmouth, Sheffield United, Oxford United. His time at Stoke and Reading was in the Premier League. An interesting character, Kitson confirmed in February 2026 that he was the anonymous columnist and author behind The Secret Footballer books, lifting the lid on the life of a professional footballer.
Maidenhead have signed quite a few new players, including five from Ascot United - Poppy Dearlove, Cherry Preisner (GK), Dani Dias, Erin Huntley and Mae Goulden, all regulars for Ascot last season.
With Swindon away to come in this group, a win today for us would put us in a good place to progress in this competition. All third placed teams with three points last season went through to the Plate knock-outs.
