The Flyers, in second place, are having their best season for some time. They finished fifth last season, after two low finishes in the previous two. This season they have dropped eight points, a 3-2 defeat at Portchester on the opening day, a 2-2 draw at Beaconsfield four weeks ago and, of course, that dramatic 3-2 home defeat to the Chairgirls in November. Trailing 2-0 at the break, Kayla Potter and Meira Ashby (2) secured the win, which may turn out to be so very important. Highlights of that game -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViI2sWrGtfU
On that defeat, Flyers manager Emma Pearmine said this week: “We’ve definitely learned from that last experience. I’m very confident going into the game”.
In the FA Cup the Flyers beat tier 6 Yeovil Town 1-0 at home, before losing 4-0 at home to tier 3 Gwalia United. In the League Cup, they are drawn at home to the Chairgirls in the semi-final, on 22 March.
The goals mainly come from Chelsie Hay, 21 from 14 in all games, 13 from 8 in the league. She joined from Havant & Waterlooville earlier in the season, where she scored 3 in 4 games. She played for Moneyfields in National D1SW in 2023-24 and has also played in the USA. Annie Northwood has scored 7 from 8 in the league. An important summer signing was left back Laura Vokes, after 10 years at Southampton Women. She has a very cultured left foot and delivers dangerous crosses and dead balls.
You have to go back to March 2022 for the Flyers’ last league victory over the Chairgirls. The fixture usually produces goals, last season the Chairgirls won 4-0 away and drew 4-4 at home.
Today’s team, a welcome return to the squad, on the bench, for Emma Delves after her long term injury.
I can’t make this one, so will be following on here. Up the Chairgirls.
No Potter today. Injury that I’ve missed?
I don’t know, but Meira Ashby starts and can play up front, or midfield.
We’re just waiting on the live feed to come through, we should hopefully be up and running in a few minutes
Kern picks up an injury in the opening seconds but Is OK to continue. Ashby is a straight replacement for Potter on the right wing.
Still no video feed I’m afraid but we’ll push it live as soon as we can
Sorry folks, it looks like there is a connection issue so we can’t get a live feed from the camera, we’ll have the full match replay up Monday/Tuesday though
Opening 10 and we’ve had the better of it, Melton and Watkins with shots comfortably saved, but we’ve just had a let off. Radbourne mispassed and Flyers shoot over.
19’, Ashby clean through but shoots wide.
20’, Hennessy shoots over from inside box, good pass by Ashby.
24’, WW 1-0 WCF. Cross from Kern finds it’s way to Hennessy to shoot home. Melton may have had the assist.
30’, Carolan feeds Melton in the box who shoots over.
35’, Flyers hit the bar on the break, and a follow up shot goes just over. A break from our corner when a Melton header is cleared off the line.
40’, long range Flyers free kick whistles past the post.
43’, another good chance for Flyers, header goes well over.
HT 1-0, good half for us, we have better control in midfield than last week, should have scored at least two, but Flyers came into it more in last ten and should have scored.
