As I understand, Wycombe made not one offer to sign Morley permanently.
Fair enough. I haven’t seen much abuse on here but that is open to interpretation and no one should be able to change how someone feels about something!
I am quite confident we did not try to sign Morley permanently, I do not believe whether Bolton would have blocked a move has any bearing on that decision. I’m not sure you would find many, if any, players, supporters and 1st Team staff who believed we should not have at least tried to sign him permanently. That for me is the problem. The money was there to offer circa £1.5M based on what we spent on others.
Oh yeah. I forgot I’m not allowed to have a discussion. Sorry everyone especially @commoner. Even though I enjoyed our to and fro, it’s not allowed because this guy thinks he’s so important he wants to let everyone know he’s ignored me.
FWIW, the discussion has been positive from all posters, even though we may not have agreed on everything.
It’s your choice who you wish to block, I took your post as tongue in cheek, which I hope it was but it could be interpreted as provocative or unnecessary
I hope your health is improving so you can get back down to AP or an away day next season, if not before!
Similar to my post to Corndog, I took his post as tongue in cheek about only seeing me and the voices in my head - which I did find amusing. It could be interpreted differently.
Hopefully we can all move forwards together, even if we have a difference of opinion
I took it as a bit tongue in cheek the first time he made a song and dance about blocking someone (me) and ignored it.
Doing it a second time screamed of attention seeking and even though he knows it’s me posting, he can’t truly and completely ignore me or let it go.
Just been listening to an interview with Dan Rice and Jeremy Sauer with Sean Conlon (Oct last year) regarding the establishment of a football academy at Wycombe. Building an academy from scratch clearly seems to takes precedence in the short term over a successful first team. The "project " as they call it will be developed over a number of years, not to be rushed as this will help avoid any short term “rabbit holes” So timing wise, as a fanbase whose primary interest is having a successful first team, this appears to out of sync with the management teams objectives of developing an academy. In essence speeding things up in terms of first team success is not in their immediate interest. Hence the major disconnect. One of the things mentioned as to why the management team wanted the academy to be developed from scratch is that Wycombe is a greenfield site which can be properly developed with no pre-conceived ideas. It’s not to be rushed and that one of the pluses of Wycombe is that it is a family oriented club, with high values and a great culture. I would suggest that given recent results on the field and the amount of vitriol felt on this topic on the Gasroom, that the existing vision, values and behaviours of the club are being quickly eroded. Surely player development and culture must go hand in hand. Otherwise we become transactional in nature like a Tesco’s or a Sainsbury’s. Perhaps it is a case of taking ones foot off the ball, but it certainly seems to go against what they are trying to achieve long term. The danger to them ( and to us) is that if the management team don’t properly explain their thought process, the fans will dessert the project and their project will ultimately fail. Strong customer service to those members of the public who watch Wycombe week in and week out should in my opinion be one of the club’s top priorities. Finally, the Elizabeth line and the London catchment area out to Reading was mentioned a couple of times. It would be interesting to know what the management team’s thinking is here.
Genuine question, what is the standard process of initiating a transfer for another clubs player?
I.E. how do you go from identifying a player you want, to the point an official “offer” is made?
Do you just call the club and say “I want to pay you £1m for your player” FM style or is there bit more finesse and conversation on how much they would want, if they were actually interested, before such offer was put in?
I genuinely don’t know why we wouldn’t have tried to sign Morley.
But at the same time if I were Bolton I would have demanded Eleventy bajillion-fakillion pounds to just start the offer stage, Dr Evil style as there’s no way I would want to sell to a promotion rival without making it really really worth it.
Edit: going on our recent history of transfers and pre Danish signings, I would have considered a 100k offer to loan a player for 6 months in that “dr evil stupid money” bracket.
I agree with a lot of your points and whether he can solve them will ultimately see whether he can cut it as a head coach. He needs to be given time though, just as Bloomfield was.
Kone has been too isolated at times in my opinion, but he wasn’t on Saturday. He saw plenty of the ball and had players up with him, but unfortunately had a poor game. Same against Shrewsbury. He’s been very much out of sorts recently, something he and Dodds needs to resolve if we’re to have any chance in the play offs.
Bolton was a good performance in my eyes. They needed the win even more than us and looked strong in the opening stages, but we held them off, grew into the game and were dominating in the 2nd half before we deservedly scored. We then held them off pretty easily before finishing the game off (which we only did due to Reach, Scowen, McCleary and Leahy committing themselves forward in injury time). Totally get the frustrations with our tactics at times, but not that day. I thought we did everything right. Don’t think we did much wrong tactically on Saturday, it was just the Orient forwards were better than ours on the day.
oh oh
Every club is different in their modern day approach. With sporting directors there is now a lot more behind the scenes chats. The traditional model is a formal fax sent to the club secretary.
Thanks for the reply. The behind the scene chat is the tricky one really to get a figure on - certainly with tapping up rules etc it could be a minefield especially if you have the player on loan already as any pre conversations with the player or an agent could find yourselves in hot water.
Throw a bit of mutual links between the two clubs (the Beaconsfield Teeth brothers sponsoring us and the club their mum owns) no doubt there was some interesting back chat if it were even on the table!
It would be truly shocking if our club secretary hadn’t sent a fax to Bolton’s club secretary enquiring about Morley’s availability…
I can obviously only speculate but as changes within the club started happening and decisions were being made above his head (training ground location, club medical staff leaving on the eve of the season starting, Scott Mitchell, people hired in left right and centre) the reality of the situation and how far away from a Managers role he was getting could really become a reality.
And I have said it before and people may think I’m stupid, but having done 45 minute commutes too and from a job that was changing and I didn’t like where it was heading, that commute becomes more and more of a heavy burden and affects home life.
And Blooms travelled from Ipswich very regularly and made a point in interviews about him missing his girls. I wouldn’t rule it out as a factor.
Invested significant volumes of money in players who have not, yet, yielded dividends.
We could well see a completely revamped squad going into the playoffs with a strong fast attacking formation led by the Danish duo…
Totally agree with you, that song disgusts me.
Very good piece of work, @perfidious_albion. Probably your best since your contribution to Close Quarters.
Must admit that I didn’t cotton on immediately to the fact that it wasn’t you conveying your own thoughts. Indeed, I thought what a load of pretentious tosh - didn’t think that perfidious guy was that bad ! Joking.
Even went so far initially (before the penny dropped) to consider suggesting that you change your username to @pretentious_albion.
Good to ave a laarf.
Is that really what some people chant ? To say that’s disgusting is obviously an understatement.
On a more salubrious note, I was amused to see that you share with me the minor irritant of a predictive feature that doesn’t recognise that you aren’t always writing in French or German.
I had a go at pronouncing the umlauted expletive but it doesn’t exactly trip off the tongue.
Sadly what they actually sing is much worse.
I hadn’t registered that ‘chant’ not being on The Terrace (or is that The Shed?) these days. So Orient was the first time I comprehended properly. It’s offensive, inaccurate and puerile in equal measure. The idiots need calling out by stewards. There is no room for the Anglo Saxon intervention in any football ‘chant’ come what may. I can only assume that ‘da youff’ are deliberately trying to be offensive to rattle the cage of us senior supporters- pathetic if true.
