If you are in a scenario where the outcome is heavily dependent on luck, then the best thing you can do is set up a system, make it as effective as it can be, and don’t make changes based on the outcomes as you will end up chasing noise. It’s what is meant by ‘trust the process.’
However, I don’t believe there is any real indication that we have set up an effective system.
It’s an interesting concept, it’s something that some international cricket coaches talk about, particularly England in the past.
“We believe the method is right, we need them to believe, we’re focusing on this and eventually the results will reflect what we are trying to do. We are not concerned we are not winning games for now” - this approach was taken for white ball cricket about 10 years ago and more recently under McCullum for tests.
I’d be happier if the board stipulated that our objective for this season is to give promising academy players minutes, aim for mid-table at best and recognise it could be worse but that’s ok as we try to do something different.
The issue is expectations are way, way higher and have been set as so with board talking about Championship and eventually Premier League.
Come on OG - what is the objective for 25/26 so we can level set.
Exactly this. Might not be popular with some but at least we’d know what we’re aiming at and not have to decipher a whole load of blah in every interview.
He talks endlessly about ‘what we’re trying to do’ without ever explaining a single thing that he’s doing or is attempting to achieve.
It’s like no one has told him how bloody brilliant we were before he came. We are aware of what exciting, free flowing football looks like, we were enjoying it up until the end of 2024.
It’s not that winning and losing doesn’t matter, it’s that you can’t control whether you win or lose but you can control your own performance. The idea is if you consistently perform well then the outcomes will tend to be positive over a period of time.
In the end it comes down to whether or not you think they know what they’re doing. If you do, then they’re putting things in place that will bring success. If you’re unconvinced, it could sound like they’re using management bollocks to explain why we only have 2 points.
I’d like to hope it will work out, but when I hear about ‘bringing the fans on a journey with us’ my instinctive reaction is ‘oh eff off, can we please try to score some goals and stop fannying about so much’.
