‘Dodds has been a complete disaster.’
Record for first 16 league games W7 D4 L5=25 points.
Gaz first 16: W6 D4 L6=22 points.
Blooms first 16: W5 D4 L7=19 points.
I’d say his record is pretty good compared to our two previous managers.
Furthermore, if MD’s record was replicated over a full season, we’d finish on 70 points, a total we’ve exceeded only once in the last 6 seasons.
Needs a little context to be fair.
We were in 2nd place 4 points clear of Wrexham and playing attractive football when he took over.
He inherited the strongest squad we’ve ever had.
When Mike Dodds was appointed, Wycombe Wanderers were second in league, four points behind Birmingham and four points ahead of Wrexham collecting 59 points from 29 games (17 wins, eight draws and four losses), scoring 55 goals in those 29 games.
It is now 25 points in 16 games and just 14 goals in those 16 games.
As I said, complete disaster.
And we haven’t even started on the additional 12 players that Dodds had at his disposal including the likes of Lowry and Berry, criminally underused while others have been run into the ground.
I’m absolutely convinced that if Gareth had this standard and size of squad he would have got a lot more than 22 points in his first 16 games. I am also convinced he would have got us over the line this season. What’s more we would have been entertained, rather than having to watch the boring, negative product served up by Dodds.
I keep asking @glasshalffull1 given the reaction of many of us on here and your stout defence of MD ( which is fair enough) what did you think of the setup, tactics and result on Saturday and what lessons need to be learned for the playoffs?
Not sure we were always entertained under Gaz but I doubt any heads would have dropped. Although @DevC is doubtful a promotion could have been secured, a full season of MB football might have been nice.
not for the first time, Dev is playing both sides of the argument. We may yet have our best season ever under Dodds whilst simultaneously suggesting we wouldn’t have gone up under Bloomfield
He is the contrarian’s contrarian
I get that Dodds can do nothing right in your eyes but it’s ridiculous to compare a record over two thirds of the season under a manager who had worked with the squad for 12 months with the record of a coach who has had one third or a season (and no pre-season) with a squad he inherited.
So are you more than happy with Dodds style of football and do you think this style will be succesful in the long term?
It’s also ridiculous to present Dodds’ stats as a good record compared to the overall season.
Anyway we can argue all we like about stats, but at least if they looked like winning games or trying to win games you can excuse things somewhat.
People are entitled to their opinion and whilst I would have liked to see an all out attacking formation, you can bet your life that if that had happened and we’d lost some posters would have accused him of being too gung ho. I’ve even read some posters say we were lucky to win games under Dodds but then say it’s his fault when we lose. Calling for him to be sacked after 16 games in which we’ve collected 25 points is just crazy.
I can remember the endless criticism of the style of play under Ainsworth, our most successful manager ever, and even about the early months under Blooms who I defended when some people called for him to be sacked. I have no idea how or even if MD will change his style given a proper pre-season and nor does anyone else.
But you havent confirmed whether or not you enjoy his current style of football?
The key word here is current. He came in with the objective to make us harder to beat and he’s done that, unfortunately at the expense of scoring more goals ourselves. I enjoy winning more than anything else because that’s what brings success whilst style of play is subjective. I enjoyed Gaz’s direct approach, plenty hated it. Each to their own.
No, no it isn’t. Because we could have kept that manager that was doing amazing things for us. We’re comparing like for like, if you going to force out the most exciting young manager we’ve ever had and replace them with someone else, they had bloody well be better.
That’s a no then.
Whose objective was it to make us “harder to beat”? Dodds’ or Rice’s?
Where did I say that? I said in terms of points he’s had a better start than our two previous managers (fact), and that if he continued his points average over a full season we would get 70 points (also fact).
You would have to ask them.
Or harder to win!
