Limbs at The Stadium of Light

Now “that”, I believe, is what is referred to as limbs

The team with a former Wycombe player won. That’s a good omen, right… Right?

Don’t we have some kind of coaching connection to Sunderland too?

I really hope this terrible news about Taiwo Awoniyi prompts a serious rethink of the ridiculous offside rule. It’s no surprise that someone has been seriously injured as a result of the flag having to be kept down.

Not sure I would agree that the offside rule is “ridiculous”. In fact if you are going to allow offsides to be judged objectively rather than on linesman impression there is no other choice.

In any game of football there is sadly a risk of serious injury. Playing on for a few seconds to check the offside decision doesn’t materially change that injury risk. Sadly in this case a serious injury did occur in that short period.

That is not what is happening

No-one is checking for offside while play is going on

The tech for automated offsides exists - we should be able to have instant decisions by now.

That misses the point. The Forest player was miles offside. Everyone watching knew it.

Give power back to onfield officials and get rid of this failed VAR experiment once and for all.

If we had instant decisions (it shouldn’t be rocket science), the whole delayed flagging would no longer be necessary.

They are testing semi automated offsides but as of now technology for fully automated instant offsides doesn’t exist.

There are no doubt many arguments for and against using technology to help with offside decisions. Risk of injury really isn’t a credible one.

Of course if you choose not to use technology to get more offside decisions right, you get errors like Orient’s playoff “goal”.

The players are often completely unaware of the flag being raised and waved and would be unaware of the “instant” decision. Fortunately, accidents caused by sliding, legs akimbo, into a goalpost are extremely rare and, in any case, are probably just as likely to occur in situations other than the one which led to the nasty accident incurred by Taiwo Anowiyi.

The poor fellow suffered a ruptured intestine and had to be put into an induced coma. Let’s hope he makes a good recovery.

They are rare, thankfully, but the current offside situation adds unnecessary extra risk - however small that risk is.

The technology for getting any decision 100% right (or anywhere near) is currently limited to goal line technology, it may stay that way, everything else currently used is a waste of everyone’s time, money and effort.
That anyone got injured seriously as a result of this ridiculous pursuit is disgusting , and it is as a direct result of bending the rules to try and shoehorn VAR in.
Nobody in charge seems to care that it also ruins the spectacle.

But it is a tiny risk compared to the general risk of injury simply by playing the game.
If you want to completely eliminate injury risk from goalposts, then perhaps we must ban players from say entering the six yard box.
This really is a spurious argument.

absolutely fine by me

The point is it’s an unnecessary extra risk… and it’s daft anyway.

Both our game and tonight’s play off are listed as being broadcast on Amazon Prime US. I didn’t quite believe it but I’ve got Stockport and Orient live and in technicolor!
