It is really sad. It was only really in reading about him after his career that it struck me how self-made he was. Having been written off as too small as a youngster, he strove for fitness and improvement in a way which was alien to the prevailing culture of a fag at half-time and beers after training with the lads. It seems much more akin to the culture of the last 20 years, in fact.

I read Keegan’s autobiography whilst on a trip to Budapest around 20 years ago. Dunno why, he just struck me as a good bloke, and I had time on my hands. Everything I read confirmed that initial impression.

His fitness regimen was honed at the Old Show Ground, Scunthorpe. He used to run up and down the steps to build his mighty calves!

Rest in peace, King.

There’s been a spate of these weird pre-season parting of ways. Gifton Noel-Williams split from Walthamstow having not even managed a competitive game. I hadn’t even clocked Defoe at Woking. Blink and you miss it.

Watford host Hansa Rostock in a friendly tomorrow at 2pm and Hansa have sold 6,000 tickets! They are coming over in numbers as part of the club’s 60th anniversary celebrations. A few of their fans were at the Tring Athletic v Biggleswade Town match last night. Hansa were relegated from Bundesliga 2 last season.

Edit - correction Hansa were Liga 3 last season.

There won’t be much left of the Town Centre by the time Hansa leave!

Hansa played the team i go to watch (Unterhaching) a few seasons ago in L3. Crazy fans, travel in their thousands. The game was classed as high risk and hence no alcohol on sale at the ground.

I once had a cracking FM08 save with Unterhaching.

Hansa are my German team - my brother lived in Rostock for 10 years. I’ve seen them four times and never seen them lose. It is, um, unfortunate that their fanbase contains a large fascist element.

York sacking their manager must be up there with the most ridiculous.

Before the start of last season, remembering what he did to us in a PSF the season before, I wondered if it was completely out of the question for us to “do a Bayo Akinfenwa” and sign Danny Welbeck as I think he was already in his mid thirties.

Fast forward a year and Chelsea are in talks to sign him. What do I know?!
