It’s the natural progression from calling Matt Bloomfield ‘the manager’ instead of his name to putting out a statement so generic it would be impossible out of context to identify which football club it was written about.
Their communication could be better, but they’ve always been clear about their plans and that statement reiterates it. Wtf do people want, flowers and chocolates?
Have to say I’m not certain what some posters want. If they’re expecting the owners to come out and say they were wrong in getting rid of Bloomfield ( assume the rumours are correct) and wrong in appointing Dodds, that just not going to happen. They believe they are doing a good job. Have to say it’s going to be a long summer if the same posters keep regurgitated the same old opinions.
You don’t have to admit anything but you could at least shout out Sam Grace for stepping in when they and the club needed a steady hand.
maybe back and thank the current manager for his efforts, even if they did fall short.
They 100% could have recognised what Matt did for the first half of the season. But they didn’t even immediately put out a decent club comms on his exit, so I wouldn’t expect him to be mentioned. Even though he 100% should.
He’s also continued to call them “Soviets” on social media with other Wycombe fans chiming in with jokes about Putin etc. There’s nothing wrong with criticising the owners but resorting to crass xenophobia is unacceptable and deserves to be called out.
The only interesting thing about that message from the club is the lack of reference to Mike Dodds. I don’t think his position in the club is as secure as some - if they’re willing to undermine Matt Bloomfield from day one they’re not going to stand by his successor, no matter what. I’ve mentioned before how I think some of Dodds’s comments about the Danes being for next season etc can be construed as antagonistic towards the man who paid record-busting prices for them - a man who also happens to be his boss. TBH Dodds’s honesty when asked a difficult question is the thing I most like about him - but I wouldn’t say it’s particularly conducive to maintaining a career in this current vipers’ nest.
I’ve seen Dodds described variously as a supply teacher and a youth team coach, which is obviously disrespectful to someone with his standing in the game. However I do get the feeling that he sees himself as more of a consultant brought in to ‘improve’ a group of players. He always refers to the players as ‘the group’ but it feels quite impersonal, like it could be any group of players he was working with. There’s no sense of a real connection, either with the club or its culture. This couldn’t be further from the GA and MB days, when you felt that everyone was in the trenches together. Before the playoffs he said ‘the fans will be here long after I’m gone’, like it was just a job to him. I know people come and go, but I’m not sure he’s the right personality to lead a club from the front. A bit of an odd fish really. But maybe that’s what the new regime wants. Improved results and performances would make a big difference of course, but even his coaching credentials now seem in question, creating a team that is basically incapable of scoring goals. What sort of ‘improvement’ is that? Another Dodds soundbite that struck me was ‘I’m still learning about this level’, like football is inherently different at L1 level. You still need to get the best from the players you have, that doesn’t mean sticking square pegs in round holes. That’s not coaching, that’s just stupidity. But what do I know, apart from watching the game for 60 years? I don’t have a coaching badge like Dodds. We’ll all be back next season, ready for more improvements. See you then.
We’d been dropping off for a good couple of months before Dodds came in - I think he probably saw his mission as getting us over the line and went a bit too cautious (although, as I mentioned the other day, there hasn’t been that much of a creative decline). Back him this summer and if things aren’t going well come Nov/Dec time, then it might be time for a change.
Biggest mistake, and this was pre-Dodds, was not signing a striker in Jan, which we really saw come back to bite us as Kone (understandably) waned towards the end of the season.
And no, he’s not good in front of the mic/camera, but I think it’s very easy to read far too much into that, when in reality he’s probably just uncomfortable.
