It’s a Tuesday night at Loakes Park and it’s the mid seventies. I’m standing on the terraces at the Hospital End. The opposition were high profile and could even be from Italy -perhaps in the Anglo Italian Cup. It’s the second half, and Wycombe have a corner. The ball is partially cleared to the edge of the box- at which point Terry Reardon steps forward and hits the sweetest volley you’ll ever see directly into the bottom right corner. A strike all the more astonishing as TR rarely seemed to score.
Was this a dream or could it possibly have happened?
Thanks so much for clearing this up for me, Newbury Wanderer. Stuart Earp’s press report has it pretty much as I remember it. Stuart refers to it as a ‘brilliant third goal, which we’ll remember for years’’. Though, I’d wager that neither he (nor Terry) could ever have imagined that we would still be talking about it, some 50 years later. Great Loakes Park nostalgia.
Grateful for the posting from the chair boys archive. Oddly enough the excellent history of the club compiled by Dave Finch and Steve Peart doesn’t mention these games.
How i love a scroll down memory lane with the Premier midweek league, the Wycombe floodlight cup the Wycombe hospital cup
And The Afa cup
There was always a cup to win if you looked hard enough back in the day
They get a brief mention in the narrative without any details, and they don’t appear in the results grid. Dave had a set of rules for deciding whether a match counted as a “first team”. With hindsight, they probably deserved more coverage in the book.
No mention of who their opponents were! I looked it up in the BFP, Abingdon beat Aylesbury United 2-1 on Easter Monday 1959. They were apparently sometimes referred to as Aylesbury Town, at that time, which I didn’t know. The attendance was not given. That was Abingdon town’s only B & B Final appearance but the report refers to them as defending champions.
