Itâs both perfectly clear what it means and a more elegant phrase
Believe you are confusing uncountable nouns eg âless waterâ with countable nouns ie âfewer itemsâ.

I prefer to use âpurchaseâ as a transaction verb, âbuyâ as a noun in conversation.
And still use a cheque book, recognising this is generally considered eccentric.
