Former WWFC Footballers

Possibly, apparently it was the u18s team.

Nice to see them in Thames Valley Royal colours too

Has anyone got video of Jermaine McSporran’s header that gave us a late win over Bournemouth at Dean Court? I loved that and it would be good to see it again.

My one memory of Jockie was him going full sprint to try and get a ball before it went out for a goalkick, slipped just after kicking it and ended up under one of the emergency access gates, making a horrible noise. However, he seemed to jump up and get on with the game. Everyone, including the ref went silent because we all thought he’d done himself some real damage

I think the season review videos stopped after 2000-2001 and that game was in 01/02. I couldn’t find any highlights on YouTube. A young Eddie Howe had equalised for the Cherries before our late winner sparked jubilant scenes in the away end and cries of “we are going up” (we were only play-off chasing). IIRC that game was followed by THAT encounter with Blackpool on the following Tuesday and the beginning of a mega slump into mediocrity.

I was convinced we were going up after that game, and then we didn’t win again all season did we?

Was the Blackpool game the next Tuesday night?

Yeah, it was a very damp squib to end the season.

This tells you the full story after the three wins on the trot against tough opposition.

We only picked up 12 points from the remaining 14 games. Relegation form.

That hammering at home to Blackpool was the beginning of the end for Sanchez, it only went downhill from there. A real shame as that Wycombe side had it in them to challenge for promotion.

The attendances column makes for interesting reading. Bigger gates on a Tuesday night than we sometimes get on a Saturday now. And the numbers compare pretty favourably to several teams now enjoying much bigger crowds than us, albeit some playing at a higher level with a new stadium.

I have no memory of that Reading defeat at all. Thankfully.

It’s easy to forget just how much larger gates were at Adams Park than they are today. Numerous reasons no doubt, but it does kind of blow the access excuses out of the water.

Although there are loads more cars on the roads now, and they’re generally much bigger.

As I recall a mutual friend boycotted that game such was his fury at the Blackpool capitulation

It’s also interesting because generally EFL attendances are on the rise. WWFC crowds declining is going against a broader trend.

It’s strange, because we’ve finally got some cash for the first time in many years, they’ve invested in the ground and match day experience, and we are occupying the upper end of L1, which is barring the COVID season the highest we’ve ever been.

It was less than 12 months since the Villa Park semi-final against Liverpool, the ground was still awash with new found enthusiasm to support the club on Saturdays and Tuesdays.

Not sure we will ever see these type of gates unless we play regularly in the Championship.

9 home games with 2 on Tuesday night with an average of 6887, our current average is 5522 over this season.

That I do remember.

The 01/02 season saw our highest ever average attendance (around 6.6k), with cup run fever and a promising start to the campaign playing its part. Amazingly this only went down to around 6k in 02/03, but I wonder how many were counted in rather than actually turned up, such was the dirge on offer. IIRC that Reading game was billed as a sell-out, and was our only Football League sell-out at that point. They were well on their way to promotion and we were about to drop like a stone.

and Wrexham at home (last season) was the highest home attended game in the 2010s/2020s

Highest league game was 9625 in 2009, not the Wrexham game.
