Thanks for that, @williwycombe although it has brought back memories of what a dire yawn-in that match was. Shows what can be achieved though from an indifferent mid table position earlier in the season. A Charlton supporting friend told me when Peter Taylor was appointed that we’d be well organised defensively and would win a good many games by the odd goal. And so it proved.
One positive from Peter Taylor that season. I wrote to him about team selection at one point - the usual stuff about why X, not Y etc - and, to be fair, he responded with some interesting (if inevitably guarded) insights. Not long after that I bumped into him at Marlow Football Club and we had a brief but affable chat. Nice guy but not the most dynamic.

Personally, I never had any problem with Peter Taylor. Sure we’d had managers with a more flamboyant and watchable style, but Taylor had a clear plan and got the players implementing it well. The following season I recall he was scuppered by not being able to recruit until the last minute because of Hayes’ brinkmanship.

I don’t recall ever writing directly to Martin O’Neill but I wrote many letters to the Bucks Free Press in those distant days and one of those related to what I’d heard about our players having been nightclubbing until well after midnight before a match against Bournemouth which we’d lost without a murmur. I can’t remember his response in any detail but to say he wasn’t best pleased was an understatement.
Yes, that’s correct, and we were left with a bunch of dog-average squad players as our new signings.
I think a similar thing happened when we went up under Gary Waddock. Waddock seems to be oddly unloved amongst WW fans and I don’t quite know why, I certainly remember the football being more enjoyable than under Peter Taylor.

I remember that and I think it was a perfect storm, not only did we not sign on any decent players but league one had possibly it’s strongest ever set of teams. Namely Leeds , Southampton, both Sheffield clubs. And Charlton amongst others Basically relegated before a ball was kicked.

Waddock achieved an EFL-high points total (80) during that promotion season so deserves credit. I moved away from the area between 2007-2011 so a lot of that period is a blur but I was definitely at more than a few matches, obviously all very memorable!

The Duberry and Luke Oliver combo was one of the more interesting centre back combos we’ve ever fielded.
Though Westwood had his moments of appallingness to join them.
Westlake rather than Westwood? I remember going to the Southampton away game in 09/10 and the awfulness of it all being etched in my brain. Dubez and Oliver played that night in one of the most insipid Wycombe performances I’ve ever seen, and there’s been a few.

A game that oddly matt Harrold scored arguably his best ever Wycombe goal.
