Well, he might have looked at the area surrounding Luton’s ground and thought , fuck no.
If he’s looking for first team football at least he knows which line up he’d walk into.
I’m hoping that least these are on the way out:
Skura (I liked him but if he can’t even get a Tinpot game, in amongst a mediocre set of CBs, Duff clearly doesn’t rate him)
Fink
Huggins - end loan
McNeilly - thought he showed a lot of potential at one time, but if he’s not even making the squad, end that loan too
Back - another that can barely make the squad
Tilley
I have occasionally seen Westergaard have a good game, but not today, and I don’t think just being a squad player is enough given what a lack of bite we have in midfield.
Of course who knows how realistic it is that we can find any takers for our cast-offs, but we are just heading to (at best) mid-table mediocrity with this squad.
Not one but two physical strikers please.
An attacking Centre Mid (Morley will do nicely but who knows)
Commanding CB, preferably also capable of chipping in with the odd goal
A new RB to give Grimmer some competition
A hardnut holding midfielder - yes we’ve got Scowen coming back, but will he be the same again post-injury, and even if he is, some competition there is no bad thing
Also a decent keeper, Norris and Van Sas have too many errors in them.
It’s so bizarre really, as he must have something about him to have been league 1 keeper of the season the year before we got him.
But he just looks to have an absolute howler in him at any given moment, and while a couple of posts on here have fallen into the silly - talk of “not wanting to be here” and being “vile” and suchlike, his demeanour certainly isn’t crowd pleaser!
I don’t know which club is going to want to sell us their L1 or Champo proven game changing players half way through the season. It’s going to be difficult, we don’t want people that are unfit and take 4 months to get up to speed. No more Euro lightweights please. The players we need are probably going to cost close to 7 figures. I wonder what level of spending power FFP will actually allow us?
I prefer to think of it more like - are there players available who could immediately improve us.
That has to be a yes!
I feel like the calibre of player we would need to make a real difference is more likely to come from a loan from a Champ side - very good L1 quality players who, for whatever reason, aren’t quite good enough to get regular first team football at the level above.
We’re not overburdened with loanees (and I expect McNeilly/Huggins to be sent back) so I think the loan market is the best short-term option.
January is a terrible time to actually buy players, given all the panic signings going on from both promotion-chasing and relegation-threatened teams.
But as I’ve said elsewhere, I’d hope for 6 new players in Jan, how realistic that would be is anyone’s guess - and they couldn’t all be loanees.
I like this thinking. We could put @glasshalffull1 out there and it couldn’t be any worse.
For a second I was actually wondering who would be more effective out there out of glasshalffull and glasshalfempty.
Then realised this must have been a bad day to have such thoughts.
One of those two would actually show some passion. The other would just do whatever Rice told him to in exchange for a comfy seat and some free plonk.
It’s certainly going to take 2 windows to get the squad sorted, it is a bang average League 1 midtable squad that Dodds under achieved with, and Duff has overachieved with so far but he can only do so much.
Just hope he has enough of a final say so he is happy with all transfers. Then we can hopefully start from a position of strength next year.
I guess what we need more than anything is a GK, CB, Morley, CF spine. With strength, quality and leadership. Not easy.
I seem to recall your passionate fella also working for the club yonks back - don’t believe he was quite so opinionated back then!
I miss the glasshalffull approach though - at least he would try and cheer things. We’re only ever 1 game away from the whole place melting down again.
Goalie, couple of CD, CM, CA and maybe the odd wide player and all good!
the only players that are good enough to fight for promotion are:
Grimmer (but likely we need someone with more pace)
Anders
Fred
Bell (only as a winger)
Harvie
Henderson
Junior
Serious money required. Or very clever loans.
Not sure about Anders after today.
It’s an odd one with the money spent.
On one hand it looks like a hell of a lot, but on the other hand the Kone deal pretty much squares all of it.
So did we spend that much because they knew the Kone deal was coming? Or do we still have most of that to spend still?
Areas of concern for me are
GK - Norris looks like he doesn’t want to be here & van Sas is only 21 so still developing as a keeper, so we need a No1
Defence - No real cover for Grimmer; Casey, Anders & Taylor are all passable at CB but we could do with someone who has some sort of ability in the air; LB looks ok & is the least of our worries
Midfield - Scowen & Abbott still to come back, but we have too many players that either do not justify a place or are frankly only backups so need a clear out before we add anybody
Forwards - we definitely need a decent CF
