Match Day Thread : Charlton (Play-offs first leg)

I always thought our best chance of going through would be to draw tonight then nick a win at the Valley. A typical London team that will feel they’ve just got to turn up on Thursday as they’ve done the hard work tonight. We’ve got to shock them on Thursday & throw them off their stride.

Virtually every poster has rightly been positive about a much improved display against a team in great form so why did you search social media for negativity and then take time to post it on here?

Will we sell out our allocation at Charlton? It would be great if we could.

Kone is getting manhandled. Jones is some defender but Kone’s shirt was round his neck for half the game. Surely someone has to have a word. I heard one of their fans talking on the way out saying that “Kone is exactly what they need if they go up”. I actually thought he had a very good game tonight.

I thought that was a really determined performance and a fantastic way to sign off the season at home.

After a crushing last few weeks it would have been so easy to crumble tonight. Instead we saw a team fighting tooth and nail for everything. Charlton compete really hard for every ball. We had to match that tonight and we did.

Hopefully that isn’t the last time we see Cam Humphreys playing at AP in light as dark blue. He’s been magnificent all season. Played almost every game and has put in a superb shift, both as the creative player in midfield but also as a grafter.

I was really happy with that.

I’ve been very negative of late but FINALLY I felt I saw our Wycombe back tonight. Hoofball / long ball whatever, it’s the play offs so I couldn’t give a sh1t so long as we get the passion, heart and desire from the players, and we had that in abundance today. As a minimum you need this to be successful in the play offs.

Charlton are a strong team but I don’t think they are anything special. We were appalling when we played them before and tonight shows what a compete mess we were that day.

All the pressure is now on Charlton, and everything about the league season pales into insignificance. They are the form team, at home, with large a large expectant crowd that could turn into a negative for them if we take the lead in the second leg.

We’ve never been more back!

I thought it was a really good solid performance. Really pleased for the team. They kept saying it gives Charlton an advantage on the radio, but I thought it means the pressure is on them…they have to win don’t they?
Do away goals count double in the semis?

What was the attendance? Can’t find it anywhere

Yes away goals double, so if it finishes 3-2 to Charlton next week then we actually go through 4-3 on aggregate.

Away goals don’t seem to count anywhere anymore, so i assume they don’t in the play offs either.

I was against the change, but it’s actually been positive i think.

That was never the rule even when away goals was a thing

First thing I did when I got in was rewatched whole match like a saddo!

I was even happier watching it back than how I saw it in the ground. Yes we didn’t create many chances, aside from Udoh in first half, but how strong did we look defensively? Worth remembering Charlton’s first chance of any note not until 69th minute.

Still concerned with where that goal is coming from but play with that same spirit on Thursday and we have a chance.

This must be a joke, right? Away goals haven’t been a thing in the play-offs since 1999.

Really pleased with yesterday, it was exactly the response I was looking for, epitomised by the moment when Kone took some treatment and to a man we piled in to stand up to them and let them know that if you fight one of us you fight all of us.

It was exactly what was missing from the game on Easter Monday and it was the reaction I was expecting from this group of players. Told me everything I needed to know about how together they still are and how they’re playing for Mike Dodds.

They’ll need more of the same on Thursday but the longer we’re in it the more nervous their supporters will get and it all feeds off that. Let’s get as many fans there as we possibly can and make it a night to remember.

Quick word for the Valley Terrace last night as well, they were tremendous and kept the noise going from the first minute to the last

Don’t think they’ve ever been a thing in the play offs have they? Pretty certain they weren’t in 94 when we played Carlisle

I was going to say something similar here…

There were two moments that summed up our team spirit last night - both thinking about the team rather than themselves.

The first shortly after Kone’s booking, Kone went for a header in their area and clashed heads with their defender with Charlton shouts for a red. Fred immediately threw himself to the floor to pretend it was he who was involved.

The second was that melee but it was more than what you alluded to Eric, it was actually far more intelligent than how you described. Aware that Kone was on a booking, both Simons and Grimmer took up the fight to the Charlton player while Leahy dragged Kone away all in one motion. It was great to see.

Away goals would only count double in the event of a draw over the two legs. They don’t count double at all in the play offs, so a draw on Thursday would mean extra time, then penalties.

I think we need to be worried about Udoh being suspended. His “header” challenge where he was late & had his arm in an un-natural position which caused him to elbow the defender.

Have to say and I’m not sure many on here will agree but Dodds’s interview about the fans was spot on. I like his positive attitude that he will be successful at the club even if it’s not the season. Hopefully it will be though. I’m prepared to give this man a chance and so should others.
