Match Day Thread : Charlton (Play-offs first leg)

Would’ve ripped your hand off for that performance, clean sheet and result before the game. Delighted we have reverted to the back four - it’s about bloody time!!! And wholly agree with Mr Sailor that the players and coaching staff deserve a lot of credit for a resilient and professional performance in difficult circumstances. Onto Thursday. Possibly the last time we see some excellent players at Wycombe. Let’s hope not though. Come on Wycombe!

That was miles better than i expected. Fred playing in an attacking position, running at them, Simons pressing high. I would have taken a 0-0 after the last 4months.

Im normally a Frank Adams stand fan… i sat in the front row of the family stand this evening… insane atmosphere down there, the volume of the away end and terrace were incredible. Very enjoyable

This performance will give the squad the belief that we can match Charlton. We can’t let them dictate the play at their place, we have to try and dominate them in midfield and use the ball intelligently when the opportunity comes. Simons and Humphries need to have great games, but I’m certain they have it in them. The stage is set for the return of the King.

This. It feels inevitable Garath will be leaving and I’d just love him to leave with a promotion to his name. Been a privilege to see someone of his sheer class at Wycombe

I feel like McCleary is one of those players who will still be going at 45 at a decent level. He’s quicker than most on the pitch still.

They don’t seem to realise that this is the best we’ve played in weeks.

Excellent fight and spirit from the boys today, and brilliant to see the home crowd united and not getting on the players backs. Same trouble of not creating enough clear-cut chances, but if you can’t do that, at least make sure you don’t concede. Two superb saves from Norris towards the end too.

Kone was extremely lucky to stay on the pitch in the first half - that’s an immediate red card if VAR gets involved (as it would at Wembley in the final…)

We’re very much still in this. Hold off the inevitable early onslaught from Charlton in the first 20-30 minutes on Thursday, and all it takes is one chance. Incredibly, after getting absolutely hammered by these a few weeks ago, I’m now convinced there won’t be more than 1 or 2 goals in the tie. Famous last words.

Someone in front of me bitched and whined about Grimmer after he fluffed one attack, idiotic, he was brilliant tonight as was Luke and Xavi, and Norris pulled out a couple of great saves.
Thought Kone and Udoh were both pretty good too but the formation doesn’t suit either of them. Would love to see Sadlier wide with one of them up front and one benched. Extra time if we get there would be a real slog on today’s form.

Thanks for my extended journey home btw Sky… Sunday night football, the gift no fan ever asked for.

So much better in terms of energy and desire tonight. Couldn’t fault anyone. Freds best performance in a long while. Grimmer outstanding. Bradley and Taylor solid. The midfield 3 were excellent, and I liked Simons in that more advanced role. Just needed a bit of magic on the wings which we lacked.

Great unity and spirit between crowd and players today.

Only exception being the two unnecessary renditions of the Lowry/Bloomfield chant in the first half complete with the C word. Lowry wasn’t even in the squad.

I know this is boring but I will call this disgrace out every time I hear it.

Sorry but it’s only a red if you super slow mo it down. Never a red in normal play. Reckless but not dangerous. No malice, no force.

No point, nobody with a brain cell is singing it

I’d be extremely aggrieved if one of their players committed that foul on one of ours and wasn’t sent off.

Not much to add that hasn’t already been said, but a few random thoughts:

  • Don’t underestimate the value of the clean sheet tonight. We lost 4-0 to Charlton 3 weeks ago - there is some level of psychological victory for us tonight.
  • Lloyd Jones is insanely good. Had Kone in his pocket all night. But, Kone started to get joy second half when he drifted wide and cut in from the flanks. More on Thursday please.
  • Charlton are beatable, although I suspect our route to doing it is going to be soaking up pressure and hitting on the counter. If you gave MD (or probably any of us) a penalty shootout right now he’d snap your hand off.
  • I thought the ref was very good. Let enough of the physical stuff go to make an attritional match watchable.
  • Fans were absolutely superb tonight. Only positivity on the terrace and well matched by the family stand too. I sadly dont get to as many games as I’d like to at the moment, but it was a real pleasure to be at AP this evening.

And not that two wrongs make a right, but Gillesphey literally kicked Kone on the floor (the incident that triggered the handbags that saw Simons and Doherty booked).

Absolutely a straight red, if the ref had seen it, which he clearly didn’t.

@glasshalfempty If I’m being honest, I couldn’t give a flying fűck how much projectile vomiting the game caused those footballing purists, it wasn’t pretty but we at least looked like a team and the crowd backed them to the hilt.

That togetherness seems like a distant memory but we’ll have to rely on it to at least give a decent account of ourselves on Thursday, if not win and get ourselves to Wembley.

It could just be a false memory on my part, but from my angle in the FA the kicking on the floor was plain to me and should have been seen by the linesman!!

Well done lads, pride restored! Now we’ve drawn against them, we need to find a win!!

Where I was on the terrace people were starting up chants that actually supported the team when some kids tried to start that Lowry song.
Hopefully more fans will do the same in future.

What was good about both times I heard it sung tonight though was thought it was drowned out quickly by another group of supporters singing ‘wanderers, wanderers’.

Honestly, thought this evening was great, a real gutsy performance from the team, and great atmosphere inside the place, loved the backing the Family stand gave the team and Terrace was bouncing.

Really proud of the players, and pleased for Dodds.

May be travelling to The Valley more in hope rather than expectation, but thinking it’s a good sign when I picked up my ticket for Thursday, I happened to noticed it’s in same row as I was sat on that glorious night there over 18 years ago!

Well done the 1887 folks. It was a great atmosphere and I think that had a lot to do with their efforts, as well as the team’s gutsy and much improved showing.
