Match Day Thread: Doncaster 16th Aug 2025

Having just watched the highlights of Sunderland’s opening Premier League game, you can see exactly how Dodds is trying to get us to play; yes they have much better players than we do but their style & approach has been similar for the last 2-3 seasons, they have just upgraded the players at each step up the pyramid.

Good that McCann couldn’t even see what the formation was. Clearly four at the back, with Harvie given licence to get further forward, well done Doddsy for falling him.

Too early to write off any of our new players. I thought Harvie was not up to it after two games last term.

i think the movie is Memento and Dodds has things like ‘3 diamond 3’ and ‘score second half’ tattooed on his body

Wouldn’t it be amazing if Rice got pumped too!!! The dream

To be fair I thought Anders had a very good game today.

Wonder if he’s had his card marked?

Yes, why the sudden change in tone? Seems strange. Maybe the stock answer of ‘it’ll take time’ is no longer applicable. I want him to be successful as I like him.

Have just watched the highlights after being out all day.

That goal has got to be one of the worst I’ve seen us concede, up there with Talia & Ingram helping the ball in (both against Northampton I think but 9 years apart)

Bizarre interview. One of the better performances of his tenure and he’s raging. Can only assume he’s had a rocket from TOG™️.

I agree. The interview was at odds with what I had seen . Yes the mix up for the goal was awful and there were other hairy moments early on . After that we looked ok and in the end looked the more likely to win it.

Very bizarre. So he’s liked the first hour of the games we’ve lost but not the game we drew. I assume when we win, he’ll put the first 11 on the transfer list in disgust. :slightly_smiling_face:

Was the first hour very different to the first two games?

Junior looks like a great addition from the highlights.

Cheer up, Mike.

Decided to sleep on his interview before commenting any further, but it really strikes me as total headloss from Dodds.

I’d genuinely say it was one of the better performances his sides have put in, especially away from home, and given both sides’ respective form.

Why wasn’t he that angry when we lost this season twice already, at home to Stockport, or newly promoted Bradford?

The failings were almost identical across all games.

Why wasn’t he that angry when we totally failed to turn up across 2 playoff legs against Charlton?

Or when we fairly meekly let promotion rivals Wrexham, Stockport and Reading all take points off us in the run in?

He wasn’t even that angry when Charlton absolutely demolished us 4-0 at home.

Feels like the pressure is being turned up to a level he can’t handle, and now he’s resorting to throwing players under the bus because they can’t interpret or execute his tactics.

One thing that he and Jack were complaining about were losing duels and lack of pressure. Something that we haven’t been doing well compared to the opposition in all three League games. Perhaps like the lack of anyone covering the attacks down the left hand side in the Stockport game, he is a lot slower to recognise than us fans.

Too many ‘ nice’ players . We need some nasty bastards in the team. We look lightweight.

I said exactly the same at the game yesterday. Some nice players in midfield, but a real lack of a physical presence. Such a shame that Josh has a serious, long term injury.

Our two most important players were Morley and Scowen. Perhaps not our flashiest or ‘best’. But our most important. Not surprised in the slightest to see us struggle when we’ve replaced them with a bunch of youthful soft boys from weak leagues.

We seem to be missing the qualities that don’t have tables and numbers against them.

That was going to happen wasn’t it?

What a depressing set of matches that was as well.

Awful, negative performances devoid of creativity. I said at the time that playing that way was a recipe for disaster against any non-dog shit, out of form teams and so it proved.
