I caught the twitter highlights, as only watched part of second half.
I can see why the GK wasnt sent off, Fred was going away from goal. I’m sure I’ve seen that as a reason previously.
I do think Henderson is a really good player, and the Anders pass for Fred’s goal was superb. He is clearly a very good player, the sort probably better at a higher level than the up and under of league 1.
Yes, but If the keeper doesn’t bring him down he has an open goal.
It was still a bizarre call to me and the whole block I was in. Like genuine shock.
However, at least we didn’t need to be against 10 to win so comfortably. As the Huddersfield game probably didn’t end as comfortable without the early red.
If you look at the reply tho, Fred’s direction is going towards the corner flag, not the goal and his touch was too heavy which would have closed down his goal-scoring angle by the time he caught up to the ball.
If anything, Norris’ yellow card was more certainly a red. It could be seen that Norris physically stopped & pulled down the striker while making very little attempt to “play the ball”. The striker was closer to goal, his touch was more measured, it was clear that his next touch would have been a shot against 2 outfield players.
Now, I don’t know if the referee was playing evens or not. If he had shown Norris red, he would have had more pressure / expectation on him to dismiss the Orient keeper.
At the end of the day, did it affect the game or result? No. Was Fred injured from the foul? No.
Even if you take Fred out (which the keeper did), it’s arguable that Woodrow is about the same distance from the ball as the covering defender, when contact from the keeper is made, and indeed he collects the ball on the edge of the penalty area about 6 yds from the goal line.
To immediately blow for the foul rather than let it continue the referee stops any potential advantage. It was terrible from the official’s regardless of what colour card he gives.
To be honest, the attacking line is now starting to click and we are getting players like Fred to perform when they were missing under Dodds. Our form is one of the best in the league and it looks like we’ve taken off the hand-brake and attacking with freedom
On a separate note to the ref’s contentious decisions not to send off either keeper, Dan Casey’s anticipation to position himself in preparation to clear off the line not long after he put us 3-1 up was fantastic. Completely unspectacular and unglamorous, but absolutely ensured we had the psychological advantage of carrying our two-goal lead into half time.
Considering the pelters he got for his mistake leading to conceding the penalty, it’s only fair we give him credit for an outstanding piece of defending.
It was a brilliant bit of defending. Hopefully more of the players will emerge from the shadow of Dodds and prove to be better signings than they have looked.
Port Vale are struggling so let’s hope for another good display next Saturday and continue this fantastic run.
