Does spending a club record fee on a defender who turned out to be OK (but not as good as the ones we had at the time) really deserve that much credit?

- He’s a lot better than ok
- 2 out of those 3 defenders were on loan and the other wanted to leave last Christmas and was out of contact at the end of the season

Of the three we had at the time one wanted to stay nearer to home and went to Lincoln,one is now at Millwall and the other was offered better contacts and asked to stay on multiple occasions.
For you to suggest Rice deserves zero credit is so unreasonable it just puts you in the chip in shoulder camp as far as I can see.

I’m yet to be convinced, and I know
I think this season might turn into the perfect transition/rebuild season. Quality manager in place, deadwood removed, defence and midfield is now pretty much sorted. That allows us to focus on sorting out the front line in the summer and just bolstering around the edges where needed. If Lowe is decent hopefully we can get him again for next season.
Hopefully means Duff and the squad should really be able to hit the ground running next season and kick on.

Yup, whilst I haven’t given up on this season, unless Lowe is an absolute revelation and takes no more than 2-3 weeks to get fit, I think our attacking capability is too weak for the playoffs.
Let’s see if there are any deadline day signings though.
As you say, we have a good core squad, so then in the close season the idea would be that we build on that with select quality signings rather than repeating the scattergun approach.

I remember Scowan and Akinfenwa trying to pacify some fans in the terrace after a game during a really bad Ainsoworth run(and he had a few) The biggest criticism from the fans was that most of the team didn’t seem to care and were not trying hard enough.
The reply from Akinfenwa is that a lack of confidence can look like a lack of effort. I believe he was absolutely right.
