Match Day Thread: Northampton 17th Jan 26

Whilst Anders has been absolutely superb, that tracking back from Fred is the cherry on the cake of his MOTM performance today.

Absolutely with you on that.

It’s just embarrassing isn’t it?

Fred was immense today, yes he scored 2 but what stood out was his tracking back & his running off the ball.

So we’ve suddenly become moral conscious fans? :man_facepalming:

I can only assume you’re new to supporting Wycombe. Shithousery is what made us.

Against Cardiff too.

2nd half, 1st he was poor

Yes but Taylor Allen is a very versatile, assister and goal scorer. And was skipper at Walsall.

Connor Taylor displaced him at the back and was magnificent.

Oxford 0-0 :heavy_equals_sign:

Peterborough lose :white_check_mark:

Because of that, Plymouth win :cross_mark:

Reading lose :white_check_mark:

More positives than negatives today.

7 off relegation played a game more though

3 of play offs, played a game less.

When can we look up instead of down?

Games against Northampton are always scrappy attritional affairs, but luckily we normally seem to have the edge

As soon as you like. No need to seek permission.

It was a scrappy, crappy game but we matched them physically and battled to the bitter end. Real GA stuff.

If CBM believed in himself a bit more, he could be a real force. Great second half.

Really like Fred in a central role. Loads of chat about needing a replacement for Kone but we already had a quick, strong, technical, good finisher.

Natural pessimism is part of being a Wycombe ( or football fan)

Some nice bits of play, but all in a low quality/ high grit performance.

Three things jump out -

  • The side is determined and willing to do the ugly bits
  • Northants were dross
  • We need some really quality in the middle. CBM did well, and Leahy is a leader and puts a shift in, but with 2 in there, we need more.

A solid away performance and a great day to win when other competitors dropped a lot of points. Some reflections:

  • Onyedinma had one of his most imperious performances yet. Worked his socks off and deserved two goals. If we can keep him fit then we have to keep playing him in this new role.
  • The midfield three that finished the game seem like a great combination. All the lefties. Allen’s recovery pace and grit out of possession won us the ball back so many times in high areas. Thoroughly impressive.
  • Connor Taylor looked pretty solid compared to his usual standards and nearly scored.
  • A lot more smiling and group cohesion and character on show. Great to see Boyd Munce joking with the away end before corners. Fink shoving Fred to the clamour of the fans. Players fighting for each other.
  • Hagelskjaer had a very mixed game. Still does some stuff well and some stuff poorly.
  • Duff is the man. Perfect subs. Perfectly timed. Great away setup.

I still think we lack concentration in our own third and perhaps we don’t have the flashier quality required to get promotion in the other half of the pitch, but who knows. Maybe we’ll continue to grow as a team as the season continues.

Delighted.

If we can put one over the Fenland folk next week then things could look very tasty. Hats off to MD and his band of ‘makeshift men’ for today’s win.

They were dross, but no worse than most of the teams we’ve played this season. With one or two high quality additions, this season still has potential.
