If we are talking about giving Fink a few games to see if he is any good why not give Vanessa Sas a few games he can’t be any worse than Norris. 3 shots on target and he lets 2 in.
Van Sas. Bloody predictive text.
Vanessa Sas sounds like an amazing sitcom character
I’m genuinely surprised people aren’t copying the Arsenal technique.
In stead of having players on the edge of the area/penalty spot that run towards the goal, they put them beyond the far post and run towards were the ball comes in.
The defence then either have to look towards the ball and have their backs to the players running in, or watch the runners and have no idea what the flight of the ball is.
We’d still fail to get the ball past the first man, mind.
We know Van Sas is worse than Norris.
After having some time to digest yesterday, it was far from our worst display. In fact the only thing I can really fault is the finishing.
The game was poised very similarly to the game against Orient earlier in the season, which we turned in our favour with clinical finishing. At the time I noted that that was the sort of game we’d have lost by 2 or 3 goals with Dodds in charge. Yesterday we had probably our most Dodds like performance I’ve seen since Duff took charge, the dreaded tippy-tappy passes in the penalty made an unwelcome return, very little of the precise through balls meeting our players without them having to break stride that had us cooing in that 4-1 win. The lack of Sam Bell and Fred really hurt us yesterday as much as not having an out-and-out striker leading the line.
Lots has been written about Fink, I don’t think his inability to score in the league is down to luck. The opportunities he had should have been meat and drink to a player with his price tag. You can say at least he’s getting into good positions, but ultimately, as a striker, he’s judged on his goal tally. If signing a player with a decent track record of scoring at this level wasn’t already imperative if we want to sustain a promotion push, it absolutely is now.
I think the Peterborough ‘keeper had taken a few distribution lessons from Van Sas. Shame we couldn’t capitalise on the ricks.
Yeh, i thought our midfielders looked for Fred every time they got the ball, and then didn’t really know what to do with it. I’m glad he was able to be with his partner, but i wonder how close to kick off the decision was made.
And yet there was one long kick out that was up there with the best distribution from a goalkeeper that I’ve seen.
What I’m noticing is that the long throw is going no where. We didn’t win a single one I don’t think. The ball from corners and throws usually dropped just before the penalty spot……where no one was stood…..every time. I don’t know why there wasn’t a distribution with someone in each ‘zone’ for the flicks or generally just to be a nuisance. I saw the same last week against Northampton. Plus the delivery from corners or free kicks was generally s**t
The game was glimpse of where we are without Fred. It seams crazy after a Summer of splurging on players that we appear so short. Our play lacked creativity and we were really pedestrian. Duff must be able to see it .
That then begs the question of what overpriced overhyped misfit Rice will bring in.
I too thought our corners & throw-ins were in a word cr4p. The only area that i thought Posh had the upperhand was with their pace- Leahy & Grimmer may have other qualities but by god they are slow.
I was as keen as most to see Fink get a full game. For a big lad he totally lacks physical presence- Posh defenders were pushing/pulling him all game and they were hardly big lads. I would suggest he’s not up to the required level. I dont think we can afford the luxury of giving him a few games to see if he clicks into gear - we did that with Dodds .
Duff has commented on the weak areas, namely lack of pace in behind and this was evident against Posh. The deliveries from free-kicks and throws were too flat a lot of the time. When we did put in a few good balls we had our chances but couldn’t convert. One of them days.
A few points to make on Saturdays game, in my opinion.
I agree with those who say we were actually, according to the stats, a shade unlucky.
We obviously massively missed Fred.
Fink isn’t good enough. I agree he needs a run of games but not with us. Send him out on lone to whatever level he will be guaranteed a start.
Grimmer isn’t a wing back. I thought we should have started with Huggins at wing back or play 4 at the back
CBM and Leahy don’t work playing together, I would put CBM ahead of Leahy now with Henderson when he returns
Harris looked good but I thought it was a bit harsh on Mullins to be dropped.
I don’t particularly have an issue with Woodrow who is good on the ball and retains possession playing behind the main striker. Having said that it would have been better to start him upfront instead of Fink.
Junior is too easy to defend against. He seems to only want to use his left foot.
Hopefully all is well with Fred and his family and he plays tomorrow night. We wouldn’t have beaten Northampton without him and would most probably have won with him on Saturday. That shows we are seriously lacking in attack.
I’m expecting a really decent centre forward to be signed this week, possibly on loan from the Championship and hopefully Morley.
Well big crowd and bit of a meh game….we lost to Posh…
You can see that without Fred, Hendo and Bell we didn’t look like we had anything really going forward. I want Fink to succeed I really do as he’s a nice young man and we sponsor him, however I’d like to see him get down the gym and bulk up a little so he can run through defenders and win headers. Not sure Junior on the right works, he always cuts in and Saturday had two Posh on him giving him little chance of doing anything meaningful, later in the game he went down the left and actually put in a decent cross into the box…more of that please. Liked the look of the new lad also.
Good crowd but really couldn’t hear any of block T in block M where I was. Also I like the fact of getting more folks through the door but when I tried to start some chants or join in with the Wanderers or Chairboys chants it felt like a library around me with most simply staring ahead in silence…..
That brings me to a thought I had regarding price points. Going to Wycombe these days is a very expensive day out. Tickets are expensive especially if bringing family etc and at £6.35 for a not looked after IPA (even had a bottle instead of draught Saturday post game and discovered it was out of date!) it soon adds up. The ticket price gets dropped a bit (no refund for the STs I noticed!
) and we get a bigger crowd…it’s not rocket science. BTW Saturday I actually drank in Wycombe pre game for £2 a pint less than the Vere, and it was decent beer.
So if the OG are reading this: PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE PRICING AT AP.
Back to being relaxed now and roll on tomorrow night.
Fink is about as potent as a daddy longlegs
Reckon it’s worth keeping a record of some of these posts for when Fink scores a hat trick tomorrow and a further 10 goals in the next month…
There’s levels. A few calling him terrible, sh!t and suchlike. Huge amount saying he’s shown very little but hope he could still come good and a few still insisting he’s amazing.
That middle ground position doesn’t exactly feel crazy and wouldn’t feel like we’d got it wrong later on if he suddenly starts scoring.
We’d be delighted if he becomes a goal beast!
Only those who semi relish using him as a tool to bash Rice secretly want him to fail.
I heard you from block N but felt really uncomfortable saying anything even breathing with who I was sat next to. They couldn’t even bring themselves to clap when the boys walked out…..take me back to the terrace tomorrow night! COYB
some one said in the last week or so that Harry Kane went a whole season on loan at Norwich without scoring when he was starting out….he was injured though
…
I think Fink will come good…saw a lot less languid lolopping around the park vs Wigan…
I hope Duff has had a chat with Leahy and Morley about free-kick duties. I think it’s time for the baton to be handed over in that part of the game Luke… ![]()
