Bridgwater United, nicknamed The Robins, will be the third higher level team to face the Chairgirls this season, sitting fourth out of 12 after six matches in tier 4 National Division 1 SW. They have record of W3 D2 L1, GF 12 GA 5. In the FA Cup 3QR they defeated Bursledon, from Southern Region D1S, 8-1 at home. Last Sunday they lost 2-1 at Maidenhead United in the National League Plate, in front of 40 spectators at York Road. Highlights of the match here - https://youtu.be/xvfFRy6sW5A?si=miTN7k73O1cVgUUl
It was largely the same squad who won 3-0 at Ascot United the previous week, the Yellawomen’s first home league defeat for three and a half years. The goals are evenly spread this season with Connie Pengelly top scorer in all games with four, and four others on three.
Bridgwater United Women were formed in March 2021, from a merger of Yeovil United Women, who were renamed from Yeovil Town the previous summer, and Bridgwater United Men. The Robins finished fourth in their first season in tier 3 National Southern Premier, but were relegated the following season, 2022-23. Since then they have finished sixth and seventh in Division 1 SW.
Chloe Melton made six appearances in all for Yeovil Town in 2017-18 in the top tier WSL, the season it switched from a summer league to a winter league.
In 2021-22 Bridgwater reached the Fourth Round of the FA Cup, losing 2-0 at home to Manchester United, in front of capacity 2,500 at Fairfax Park, Bridgwater. This season they are playing home games at Clevedon Town FC, 26 miles from Bridgwater.
This will be the Chairgirls’ fourth appearance in the First Round, including two seasons in the 1990s before qualifiers existed, and a win would equal their Second Round appearance in 1991-92. Both teams know they can win but Bridgwater are the favourites.
The match on Sunday is not only about prestige and publicity to a wider audience, but also finance. The winners earn £6000, the losers £1500, with £8000/£2000 the prize in the next round. W3 have already gained £7000 so far this season in the FA Cup, such sums are hugely important to the club in their aim to rise up the pyramid.
Ticket and match day information can be found here.
Tickets have been advertised as cheaper if bought online. I cannot find the on the day price at the turnstile, but prices are very reasonable anyway, especially for children. There is plenty of space for them to run about in. Careful of the potholes in the car park, it is small and does fill up but the link has details of alternative parking not far away in Burnham village. There is a bar and food is available. I am hoping for a 200+crowd, it should be a good atmosphere and, hopefully, a tenth win on the bounce this season!
Don’t forget the clocks go back one hour tonight.
The long journey from Somerset is even harder for the travelling Robins, the M4 is shut this weekend between junction 18 (Bath) and junction 19 (M32).
Still 0-0 at 20’, Bridgewater pressing hard, but best chance so far was for the Chairgirls when Potter, in space the box, mispassed rather than shot. We are trying to pass out from the back but Robins are wise to it.
26’ WW 1-0 BU, break down the right ended with two shots saved and blocked but Laura Hennessy shot the loose ball home.
35’, 1-1 great shot from side of area into the roof of the net, Delves had no chance.
HT 1-1, Chairgirls came into the match more after the goal, and almost took the lead just before HT when the keeper just managed to push the ball away on the goalline. Appeals for it crossing the line were to no avail. Bridgwater are a very good team and have showed their upper level experience. Our best moments have come from Potter and Watkins runs but we need to get them more involved, running onto the ball.
Lucia Delves off injured on 50’, seems to be a knee injury. Axelle Courlander replaces her.
Edit - 10 consecutive posts rule.
We’ve had a good start to the second half, some good attacks down the wing. Melton had a half-chance in the six yard box.
65’, Mulvaney on for Hill.
Come on Blues
75’, Ellen Wardlaw on for Cat Beaver.
Any updates Steve, the Women’s team really are doing the club proud.
