Last season in their league cup group, Chelsea began with a 3-2 win at AFC Wimbledon and then lost 2-1 at Actonians. A 7-1 victory followed at Maidenhead United, and a second place in the group took them into the knock-out phase when they lost 4-0 at Oxford United.
That Maidenhead win included three goals for Eva Hendle and four goals for Lois Shooter. Chelsea have awarded both players professional contracts this summer, Hendle has now gone on loan to Glasgow Rangers and Shooter to WSL2 side Nottingham Forest, both for a year. That is the quality of player we may face.
The format of the competition changed last season, with the introduction of 16 Academy sides. From 22 groups of four teams, the group winners and 10 best runners-up go through to the knock-out stages. The other 12 runners-up, and 20 best third-placed teams advance to the Plate knockout rounds.
Cheadle Town Stingers beat Moneyfields on penalties in the Plate Final. AFC Bournemouth beat Plymouth Argyle 1-0 in the Cup Final.
These are this season’s groups.
In our group, Swindon Town won 5-2 at Maidenhead United tonight. Half-time 1-4, attendance 88.
