Totally baffling. All of the top L1 centre halves last season were very tall. Klarer, Low, Caleb Taylor, Lloyd Jones, Paudie O’Connor, Helik, Bindon etc.

Dodds watched Low, Taylor and Bradley all season and thought fuck it yeah we’ll bring in a 5’10 centre half.

Even more worrying when you consider that Grimmer would also be part of a back three, meaning two of our three centre halves will be short for size. Mikki van Sas hardly looks imposing either! He’s too short and thin if we are to play with a short back three.

The more I think about us next season the more I fear watching us.

As did Anthony Stewart who was also just shy of 6’.

And - as an aside - whose daughter went to same nursery as my son leading to her saying to one of the staff “that man loves my daddy” when I was picking up my boy one day!

Taylor Allen is 6’1” according to Wikipedia. Hardly a midget.

I read he was 175cms. And I’ve just checked and it must be my eyes at my old age. On a bigger screen it clearly says 185!

Thanks for correcting me - and putting my mind at rest!

Massive generalisation here, but…

It’s interesting to see that there is a general dislike of data within our recruitment model but there is also a general perception that any centre back that we purchase needs to be 6 foot plus

The “6-6-6 rule” in dating refers to a recent trend where some women seek men who are at least 6 feet tall, have a six-pack, and earn over six figures according to the New York Post. This “rule” is often discussed in the context of dating apps and has sparked debate about its effectiveness and potential to create unrealistic expectations…

…especially among fans of lower league football teams

Midget is unkind and potentially offensive but I’ve done some more digging and it looks like I got the height wrong. With a back three, if that’s where we’re heading (pun intended) they don’t all have to be giants.

Is there a general dislike of data? I, for one, love it and think it’s essential for making the most of the market for players. As long as it’s used wisely as a tool and not an outcome.

Seeing as part of my job has been promoting statistical literacy for many years I never tire of explaining to people that any statistic can be used to support ANY argument a person wishes to make.

I’ve only just seen your post. I’m thoroughly confused now, especially as I looked at some action stills and he certainly doesn’t look 6’1” !

Apologies for any offence caused. I agree it was flippant and unkind - although it wasn’t my intent I hold my hands up.

Anyway, is this where I complain that the message board is too woke and that I’m being cancelled rather than reflect on my use of language? I’m not totally au-fait with the protocol in these circumstances.

Now I’ve seen him slated at 178cms as well! Which might be what I saw yesterday (and still misread!) after all. Anyway, he’s not tiny, but he’s not a giant - especially compared to what we saw last season.

I’m 6-6-0 as they should be playing for love of the game only. Just like I do in my job where I obviously donate all my salary to charity.

Do you agree with my point about height not being as important in a three (provided there’s a Taff or a Sonny in there)?

strange comments about Mikki - he looks quite stocky… in comparison with Norris looks more imposing charging down shots.

Also height does not make you a good CB. Luke Oliver was 6ft 7 and he was shit

Luke played centre back at Sunderland. I don’t think he’s very tall. It seemed to work for him.

My perception is that there is a dislike or scepticism around the use of data on here.

However, I am very much in your camp though because i think it is a valuable and necessary tool to be used as part of recruitment (and other parts of the club) , as long as it is being used to inform the decisions along with a range of other factors.

I think that those who scoff the use of data would probably be similar people who may have scoffed the use of sports science in the past

It was due to an injury crisis and he was also targeted by oppositions and was at fault (although not to blame as he doesn’t have a say in being taller) in plenty of goals according to my Mackem colleague - someone that loves O’Nien, BTW.

Although he also saif that the flip side is because he looks so sweet and innocent he also got plenty of questionable decisions against bigger centre forwards!

What’s your point? No one has said tall player = good centre half.

I’ve said that in my view being taller helps in a position where you need to win a lot of arial duels. You’re entitled to disagree with that, but if that’s the case then I’m sure you’d be happy with us playing someone exactly 5 foot in that position?

“Why are they eating pasta and getting a good night’s sleep! They should be down the pub before the game! Two pints, a packet of fags and a fry up at half time never hurt Simon Garner”
