That’s literally a paraphrase of my original point. As part of a two I find it concerning if they’re not both at least six foot. I also said it’s at least partially irrational.

So, yes. I 100% agree with you. Apart from that there won’t be a Taff or Sonny in there. Or a Joe Low or Caleb Taylor. :frowning:

I’m now wary about mentioning anything about patterns I’ve noticed in our signings though one other one worth flagging is that almost everyone we’ve signed since Sonny Bradley, with the exception of Dan Casey, looks pretty skinny to me. I’m not saying we need a squad of Hulk Hogans but we can’t play 11 players with speed and agility and expect not to have them battered off the pitch on a regular basis.

This is perhaps a problem with signing players based on data - each skinny individual may shine when played in a team where he’s protected by bruisers, whose Top Trumps ratings will look pretty pedestrian by comparison. But take them away and the skinny kid is soon getting out muscled on every ball - which makes it pretty hard to get those assists and XGs and whatever else is in fashion this season.

Height and weight will be included in any metrics along with stats on passing, heatmaps on the pitch, how many sprints at what speed etc.

As stated above using data is never an issue. How it’s used is a huge one, though.

Plus it MUST be used in conjunction with intangibles like determination, reactions to adversity (conceding goals, getting bad refereeing decisions etc.), leadership and the like.

This is why Ainsworth - who uses his judgement of character primarily - can unearth gems no one else sees, but is also incredibly limited in what he can achieve, as personality and “the evidence of your eyes” only gets you so far in the modern game.

Which is why we need more physically imposing players in the team. Which statistically tends to be players who are bla…

Nothing.

Totally agree.

Of course they’re going to rank highly on the offensive metrics if they’re agile and playing for sides that average 55%+ possession e.g. Quitirna at Crawley.

Of course they’re going to rank highly on the defensive metrics if they’re averaging 40-45% possession and winning a lot of aerial and ground duels e.g. Dan Casey at Motherwell, Boyd-Munce at St. Mirren.

They have to find a way of normalising the data and combining with the ‘eye test’ to analyse effectively. The club have rightfully not publicised the way they interpret the data, but I’d love to be a fly on the wall & understand how they’re interrogating the datasets and how they’re drawing their conclusions.

Wasn’t it under Ainsworth the team started wearing the GPS vests to give more data?

So far, we’ve done race, height and now weight. Does the data examine what music they like? This information could polarise the Gasroom…

Wycombe Wanderers players enjoy a variety of music, both to get them pumped up before matches and to relax and unwind. Some players enjoy high-energy tracks like “All I Do Is Win” or “Belter” by Gerry Cinnamon. Others prefer classic rock anthems like “Immigrant Song” or “Gimme Shelter”. There’s also a love for some local tunes, with one player mentioning “One Wycombe” as a favorite. Additionally, some players have personal favorites like “Liquid Spirit” and “A Whole New World” by Aladdin.

Luke O’Nien has left

(He mentions the movie Aladdin in an interview in the most recent of the old Wanderer issues that has been posted on here)

I’ve no problem with data. I do have a problem about how effectively we seem to have used it so far though and i have real problems with people (and to a certain extent AI algorithms) who make any decisions based solely on data.

To be fair, two of the best players who I have ever seen play for Wycombe (Garner and Tony Horseman) seemed to live on a diet of fags and beer (and were on the short side).

I’d expect anyone who remembers the horrors of Peter Taylor

Read your comments that’s how it reads. Frank Sinclair was not bad in the air.

Can you tell me where I’ve said that tall players are good as I can only see comments about the difficulties faced by shorter players.

It’s like saying “someone with no hands will be bad at piano” wouldn’t mean “everyone with hands is amazing at piano.”

And that ends remedial logic for today.

Which is why the West is undergoing population collapse.

Which is why in 2034 robots will have replaced humans in football.
