Signings - Hit or Miss

I thought Connor Taylor did really well when he came on yesterday. I’m not at all surprised that posters who were quick to jump on him for his performance at Plymouth haven’t acknowledged this

Unfamiliar though I am with the appearance of a slapped bottom, I get the message.

@Chairboys80’s thread about the hits and misses of the present (soon to be mutilated ?) squad has set me thinking about one or two players who arguably have not quite lived up to expectations. One of the key issues now, following the sad news about the seriousness of Captain Jack’s back injury, is the future of Niall Huggins. His potential has been obvious of course, given his background with Sunderland and the Welsh national team, but I don’t think I’m alone in having had slight reservations about how well he was slotting in to our present lineups.

Cometh the situation, cometh the man. As a former forward with Leeds and a fullback with Sunderland, Niall Huggins appears to be ideally suited to the right wingback position. The 5/3 at the back formation introduced so successfully against Cardiff and continued against Wimbledon may or may not be rubber stamped for the rest of the season but, if it is, the very least the club needs to do is to ensure that he stays with us for the rest of the season.

Following on from that, I agree with @Chairboys80’s contention that Connor Taylor is starting to show the attributes he was reputed to possess whilst playing for Bristol Rovers.

I wrote the above post in response to @petef1,s post, final paragraph, but was interrupted and forgot to post it. I hope it hasn’t been overtaken by events or, indeed, undisguised disbelief.

Woodrow is absolutely not a miss.

bought in as a striker but does not play there …he thinks he is too good/creative to be a number 9

It’s nothing to do with what he thinks. Michael Duff sees him as a link between midfield and those further forward. I think he fulfills that role very well.

I doubt whether he has ever been a number 9.

fair enough , personally dont think be is good enough for that role, whereas someone like Humphries is imo…

Agreed. I’m hoping Connor Taylor & Bradley Fink will come good in time. Support all those in quarters over halves, hoops and stripes. Things could always be worse, we could be Man Utd fans :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth:

Did you actually ask him what he thinks?

Hardly any teams play with a traditional number 9 now. You’re out of date by about 10 years.

The modern number 9 is all about being mobile (ie popping up everywhere, as Woodrow does) and playing balls into space for runners (which Woodrow is excellent at) not headed flick-ons.

disagree , number 9 and focal points are more impactful , IMO Woodrow does not contribute enough to the attacking play, Fink come on for 15 mins and had 4 chanfez , woodeow has none in 75 mins …tells you alot

It tells you we were 2-0 up and AFC were going all out to snatch a result.

With the greatest of respect it’s comments like this which show a naivety and lack of understanding about the game.

It looks like that long ball that Fin Back gave up on (cannot remember who it was against) was the beginning of the end for his Wycombe career.

been involved in football all my life, my eyes tell me what I think in regards to Woodrow you can disagree and that is fine , does not make me naive

I agree @Johnny7 . @Chairboys80 , Woodrow adds so much more to our game. He is almost playing as a deep striker to hold the ball up and help people get alongside the player beyond him (usually Fred or Mullins).

I agree that there might be someone better out there to do his job but, right now, honestly, we are completely different team without him.

Fink could not do what Woodrow does in that position. I think we are very lucky to have him and he would leave a gap in this particular team if he were not there.

Fink came on and failed to score from three good chances - which came about because Wimbledon were chasing the game by the way.

Woodrow is a nice tactical option to have, but he’s never going to score 20 goals a season. Woodrow can still be a very valuable squad member, but to compete at the sharp end we’ll need more regular goal scorers. Everybody’s looking for those players though, aren’t they.

Totally agree. Fink only got those chances because Wimbledon were chasing the game. Pretty sure if it was 0-0, it would have been a different story.

does make me laugh saying its because wimbledon chasing the game…Fink still got onto those positions, whereas Woodrow never does …i would 100% take Humphries playing in the 10….so much better player than Woodrow.
