The World Cup

The greatest invention by humanity

Any other brothers and sisters travelling?

Still got my eye on the Kansas City games. England v Croatia in Dallas is the dream, but it may prove impossible.

I’d planned to apply for the SF and Final via the England supporters club but decided against it when the insane pricing came out.

The greatest invention ruined by FIFA and America. Only the super rich can afford this one.

All booked for Ghana, Panama and R32!

Being half Scottish and half English and caught up in a bit of WC fever after Scotland’s win against Denmark, I looked into going with my lad, but the prices are obscene.

No wish to travel to the States any time soon.

Might need the World Cup to cheer me up from my sulk if we don’t get to the playoffs but I will be watching from home.

Never been to a WC or EC. Not for me this time but tempted by 2030 but only if ticket prices come down to vaguely sensible prices.

Seeing as tho every fan going is going to be tailed by ICE and forced out of the country as soon as the game has finished, I’m more than happy to give this a miss!

Lot of crime in America. Word of advice, keep your traveller’s cheques in a bum bag.

Never been, never intend to visit.

So many more interesting places and more welcoming locals.

How do you know the locals are not welcoming if you’ve never been?

America and Americans have faults but the locals have been very welcoming and friendly during my six visits there.

That’s a very good question.

I’ve been lucky to travel extensively with work and for pleasure and had a long standing business relationship with a US company. Generally as individuals I’ve found them to be ok but in groups I’ve found them very much not ok.

I’ve always found more interesting places to visit in my mind and continue to, though I did look at shipping my car over to the US 10 years ago and driving coast to coast and then shipping it back. The national parks would have interested me during the trip more than the cities or people.

Appreciate this is a sweeping statement, but American’s are some of the most friendly, welcoming people I have come across and I’ve been to most places in the world. Inquisitive, chatty and fun to be around. Visit the US if you get a chance, it’ll change your opinion. And if it doesn’t, you’ll at least have eat well.

I’m sure I’ll get to the US one day and I’m sure I’d make the most of it. I have invites from friends in Seattle(American) and others in Florida(English/German) so a short taster trip might get me up for a bigger parks trip.

The food worries me, my waist line is big enough already.

Americans are definitely a bit quirky but i have spent a lot of time there, mainly the mid-west but also across the east coast. Each time I have found people to be extremely friendly, welcoming and inclusive. Two of my best friends are Americans i met by chance. One of whom dragged me along on their bachelors party after chatting for just 5 mins in a bar.

Appreciate that you are unlikely to have similar experiences just by visiting DisneyLand or spending a couple of nights in NYC.

I don’t think that “ordinary” Americans will be the problem. The setup they now have for deporting foreigners is run by a different bunch of hardmen. Anyone who goes had better be squeaky clean and with all the right credentials.

My old politics teacher regularly said that as individuals, Americans are the loveliest, friendliest most generous people you could meet, but as a nation, they’re unbearable.
