Former WWFC Footballers

In my best Ian Dury voice, Chris Forino-Joseph and Aaron Morley were both unused substitutes for Bolton Wanderers today in their 2-0 home win over Plymouth Argyle.

“What a waste.”

I spotted Gareth Ainsworth yesterday on his own sipping a quiet coffee in Cafe Nero in Wokingham.

No point to this post other than it delighted my wife and i that we saw him sat in the window as we drove past on the way to a family bbq!

Thought I’d read everything but a blue disc still remains on my thumbnail pic.

A few familiar names now within the PFA trialist squad. And Fabio Borini!

Totally forgot about Rolando Aarons. Incredibly hyped when he arrived but has barely played 40 games in the last 4-5 years.

Let’s get Fabio

At the other end of the spectrum, Spurs might be signing Eze

Alex Samuel to Partick Thistle.

AAH misses penalty to send Ipswich out. You can take the boy out of Wycombe …

Ali Al-Hamadi misses the sixth penalty for Ipswich as Bromley beat them 5-4 on penalties.

Overnight in London with work last week and went along to Romford vs Hullbridge Sports in the Essex Senior League (Romford play at Barking, where Bobby Moore used to be a ball boy!) I didn’t see the confirmed line ups until I was on my way home from the match, and was astonished to find out I’d been watching Billy Knott in midfield for Hullbridge. Step 5 quite a way down for someone who showed a lot of promise with us (vague memory of an excellent goal at Portsmouth that was abandoned at half time due to heavy rainfall) and went on to play regularly for Bradford.

Didn’t AAH spend time on loan at Bromley too?

As a non-league fan with Maidstone (home town), Wealdstone and Wycombe for over 40 years until switching to the big time with the Wanderers, I watched Bromley many times but my only visit to the Hayes Lane Stadium was when a work colleague at MOD Stanmore who’d been on trial at Lower Mead (Wealdstone) was included in the Reserve team squad for a match there.

Sam, a wiry 23 year old Scotsman, used to run rings round the rest of us during lunch break kickabouts. I drove from Harrow to Bromley in my BMW (!) Isetta bubble car - the only BMW I was ever likely to own - full of hope and expectation. Ok, Sam had to borrow someone else’s boots (goodness knows what he’d been wearing whilst on trial) but I was unaware of that at the time.

Anyway, I positioned myself on the rail closest to the area where Sam would be making his dazzling right wing runs. Sadly, as the minutes ticked away, it became increasingly obvious that Sam’s teammates were reluctant to involve him and to say that he was anonymous was perhaps the kindest way to describe his performance. That afternoon brought home to me with a vengeance just how skilful even second string players for the best non-league teams needed to be. A real eye opener.

He won the FA Trophy with them I think.

He did spend time on loan there. Don’t know about the FA Trophy.

Jamie Bates made his 1st debut for us at Bromley in 1986.

We won 4 nil or 4-1.

One of our greatest ever players, Trevor Aylott, played for Bromley!

I had no idea he had played for us in the 80s

Same, Wiki has him as having played one game on loan in 87 but then doesn’t mention it or give any context.

I was at Hayes Lane that day, Jamie Bates was only 18. Noel Ashford ran the show that day, as per usual.
